I have many friends at work, and family members, who take cruises. They all love it. I just don't understand what it is that makes people think this is the way to go. Just the idea makes my skin crawl.

I just got back from my first trip to Roatan. I didn't see the chair lift, but I did get a glimpse of a few of those monstrous cruise ships, mega-resorts, and the new mall. I'm glad I got to see what I did before it got any worse. I'm glad I took a scooter out to the other end of the island. I hope I didn't contribute much to the degradation of what it was that I went there for.

If the lifts were the beginning of the end the new Pristine Bay development and Black Pearl golf course are the nail in the coffin. We walked the development and it is stunning. The development along with its road almost bisect the island. The workers are swarming like ants on the construction site. The grass on the fairways look like greens where I come from. A whole new clientele will be coming to Roatan if gambling is actually allowed there.

oh crap. A golf course???? :shakehead:
Does everyone realize what a golf course on an island means? To keep the grass green they have to pour fertilizer on it, and the rain and watering soak into ground and run off into ocean.... and that fertilizer is toxic to coral and fishlife. Many Caribbean and Pacific islands have destroyed their reefs like this. Yucatan Mexico is suffering from this right now... tons of huge resorts and golf courses, andd the fertilizer is soaking into the cenotes and ocean. Yes the tourists will come to play golf, but the diving will be killed.

I saw this in Oak Ridge a year ago....

Is it something to do with the golf course? Where is the development located exactly?

(And how come you're not in Minnesota?)

I don't know about the ship but they have quite a bit of beach on the north side to park it.

The entrance is by the MegaPlaza in French Harbour. The road goes over the ridge to the north side.

Attached is an aerial of the development last year before Martinez took over.

Oh, so that's what that road was for. Here are the exact coordinates: 16.375939N x 86.4642262W at Roatan's Black Pearl CC & GC

Better the North side gets that run-off than the fragile South shore. Well- it will spread everywhere soon enough.

That is horrifying.

This has to be one of the most negative threads on ScubaBoard. I get the feeling that some don't want us to visit Roatan.

Don't you understand Net Doc,:coffee: if we can eliminate tourism, progress and improvement in the life style of the locals, they can be kept barefoot and saying Yesum Ms. Daisey where you want to be drove to:confused:--and we can have the diving all to ourselves.:crafty: Keep them yankees off the island,:rofl3: them spending there money there just drives the price up for the rest of us.:blinking:
