SmartCom came back fixed, with my name still written on the back of the case.

Just a circuit board swap most likely. I hardly see that as a "repair" that requires skill or expertise

How LP got their SP/Uwatec stuff is an open secret....

But, how do they get their hands on Atomic gear all the time then? I cannot convince myself to believe there are dive shops closing down "consistently" whenever they need to secure gray market Atomic stocks. Not to mention, they get them new and fast.

If Atomic's online sales policy is indeed SO strict, how? How does this happen?!

Almost all the manufacturers sell to Leisure Pro, one way or the other, they just do not admit it. The much smaller local dive stores actually believe their salesman and the manufacturer. They talk nonsense about being authorized dealers and other warranty stuff. In the meantime Leisure Pro is selling the latest items at the best pricing.

Leisure Pro is the largest and most complete dive supplier in the world. I have not been in NYC for several months, working in California for awhile, when I do get back to Manhattan in mid February I will sure stop in to Leisure Pro and see the latest they have to offer. They always have the newest gear and great pricing without the attitude that I usually encounter in the local stores i visit. I just like to dive. I don't need the jive.

Next California trip will be to Northern California and I am looking forward to a day or two diving in Monterey and a visit to the world famous aquarium.

ScubaPro/Uwatec, Aqualung/Seaquest/Apeks sell directly to Leisure Pro. It is as simple as that. It allows them to move large quantities of product without any warranty liability. They then feed all of their "authorized dealers" a song and dance routine about protecting their business. They in return pretend to believe them because thats what they want to hear, all the while repeating this song and dance to their customers justifying their inflated prices. It's nothing but a win, win for the manufacturer because it allows them to sell to everyone.

I think they sell to them but through their European divisions. That allows their U.S. divisions to accurately say that they don't sell to them.

It also allows them to subject the products to different warranties; the US divisions are not responsible to offer warranties for products that they did not sell (or have pass through them). This is not so different from purchasing electronics in different Countries (Nikon, etc)

The importer would be responsible for warranties on these items. In this case I believe that would be Leisure Pro (unless they tell us different), and taking on that responsibility is probably what lowers the costs and allows them to offer the pricing that they do.

I looked into buying my new gear with Leisure Pro because their prices were way lower than any retailer was offering. Once I asked them if they were an AUTHORIZED dealer, they said no. At that point, I went into Force E which I know to be a well established shop that will be around to offer support and service my product- I'm OK with paying a bit more for that. I work in the marine electronics field and we deal with this kind of thing often. Many times, boaters would rather go to West Marine or order their electronics online and install things on their own to save money. Maintaining a dealer network costs big money and it is in place to protect both the integrity of the manufacturer and to protect the consumer as well. Saving money is great, but most of the time it will run you about the same in the end if not more.

LP is a grey market dealer. No different than all the others in other industries (i.e. cameras, electronics, etc.) If you choose to buy from them you are taking a calculated risk in that there is no manufacturers warranty. You instead have LP's warranty. BUT...You most likely save 25% or more on the item. Risk versus reward...plain and simple. There are 100 threads here debating LP versus your LDS. Accept each for what they are and decide from there.

I had an Oceanic Veo (backup to my AI Computer) from LP that got stuck in PC Mode. LP replaced it without any issues whatsoever. That's the only thing I've ever gotten from them but I can't complain. Save $50 in the process.

Personally, for life dependent equipment (i.e. regs, primary Computer, etc) I want it from an authorized retailer (Usually Scubatoys). I accept that I'll pay a little more than LP but its worth it to me. As I said earlier, take each for what they are and choose from there. Just don't expect LDS service from LP and don't expect LP pricing from your LDS.
