would/did any of you dive to 100' before AOW? and if so... about how many dives did it take to work up to that?
I understand the need to be comfortable but assuming you are comfortably and are with an experienced diver would you have any hesitation about diving to 100' within your first 10 dives?

Probably not the wisest thing, but I was with 2 divers that have been diving longer than I have been alive and the conditions were perfect. No current, GREAT vis, etc.

I would have, but my wife wouldn't. She prevailed. We did AOW in large part to increase her confidence about diving deeper. It worked primarily because of the presence of an instructor who also fit the category of "experienced diver."

absolutely-----I took AOW in '86(year after myself, wife & 14 YO were certified--for OW)...Now my wife & daughter never took AOW & before I had my AOW, we all 3 had been to 100'+ around 15 times ie the 3 of us dove Belize 4 months after our certification(100'+) & Grand Cayman's North Wall(120') 7 months after our certification.....IMO, just have to remember what you're taught.....

EDIT:total dives to get to 100+---myself ~20, my daughter ~15, my wife ~10....

I would pass IF it was without an instructor or good DM. I am not one of those screamers who chant "don't dive beyond your training" and have minimal respect for the AOW title, but at less than 10 dives in an emergency you may not have the ability to handle all possible emergency stuff yourself. Also some people get narced more than others and you can make stupid decisions. Much better to slowly work up to diving deep.

Lastly, diving with an experienced diver is not the same as diving with an instructor / DM who are trained to look out for newish divers. Personally, I think I am an experienced and savvy diver, but probably a crappy replacement for an instructor.

I would not with only 10 dive . that being said I worked my way down the the 100'. My avrege dive for the first 35 dives was 75'. work your way down so you aren't anxious at the deeper depths air is realy scarce down there.

Yeah. I did. After about 25 dives.

I would definitely be hesitant to take a diver with 10 dives to 100' or even 90'

Great point. It depends on your definition of an "experienced diver." I was with two people I knew very well (relative and his dive buddy) and they BOTH watched and stayed close.

If it was someone who just had more dives than me, no way!

AOW is a funny thing. You don't really learn anything new in AOW, just rehash what you've already learned in OW, only now you have some diving experience to relate it to. So the question about diving to 100' shouldn't really be whether you're AOW, but whether you're experienced enough to manage narcosis and to deal with an emergency, should one arise.
