Ok so I only made it to page 13 before I gave up and won't come back. I love my mk2 108-109 combo. And when I walked into a platinum SP dealer a couple years ago, he told me to toss it and buy new. "your life depends on it!" that's when I knew SP was not for me. Found a reg tech and a few DIY members to help me out and I still love my old SP set. I will not buy another SP. that line of crap of "it's old buy new" it against the idea that you're buying something that will last. Scuba pro did it to themselves by allowing for dealers to put an expiration date on how long it will "be the best"

There are 3 LDS's close to me. 2 of them are owned by guys that have double hose US Divers (or equivilant) regulators that they still dive today. (not just dive shop decorations...although they have plenty of those too) If that guy is diving a reg from the late 50's, I sure feel ok on a reg from the 90's! As long as its maintained!

UPS probably runs real close to you house though

Flat rate boxes from USPS are a godsend! (though I would NEVER dream of shipping lead...)

Why are you blaming Scubapro for your LDS being an idiot? Scubapro still supports MK-2 (in fact it is still in production) and the 108/109. You can even upgrade the 109 to a balance adjustable. My LDS tried to pull the same thing on me saying my Apeks TX-100 is old and wanted to sell me a Titan.

Hope no minds me jumping onto this thread,,but it has alot of info along the line of what i am thinking.. I and my wife are just taking our open water this weekend.. We both had MARES mv12 regs.. My wife felt it was a little hard to breath tried our instructors Aqua Lung legend,, felt much better so she now has one.. There is no comparisions bewteen the two Legend much better but unfair comparisionn as you get what you pay for.. I will do my open withthe reg I have,, but want to switch out after.. I will only be a warm water rec diver,, but since tech divers dive under more adverse conditions it would seem they test by fire.. Is there a good HOG set up that you can advise for a newbie, good breathing reliable. I live in central coastal Florida (stuart) cant seem to find a dealer to go to..

In scuba people will always say you get what you pay for but it is not usually true. The scuba companies will add a change here or there which costs them a few dollars but increases the costs of regulator by a hundred dollars or more. I do not own a Legend but the consensus on SB seems to that the Titan LX breaths the same as the Legend and is significantly less expensive. Remember your Scuba instructor gets a "key man" discount on his/her gear so cost is not really an issue.

Also was the Mares reg a rental? If so you are not making a valid comparison as rental regs usually will not breath as well as someone's personal regs because of the use and lack of care. You may want to search old threads to see what people think of the Mares MV12 and the Dacor Viper as they both appear to be the same reg.

According to HOG, Stuart dive shop is a dealer. You may want to consider the Edge line as they are for rec divers and come with yoke rather than DIN fittings.

Never mind.

glad i went with the Subgear sg-1000 regulator from scubapro.

price, quality, customer service, parts availability, service
availability, etc... just seemed way better than going with the Hog set up; like i originally planned on going with because of the cheap price they offer them at.
I found out that there are a lot more important factors to concider then just price which most only think about when getting into this sport.

The sg-1000 breathes so nice and SOOOOO easy. almost too easy! I didnt even have to mess or open the Diver-adjustable inhalation effort valve.

I plan on doing a complete review on the sg-1000 after my next dive this weekend in laguna where i get some other dive buddies opinions on the reg set up as well.

Are you talking about Atomic??? I would love to know? I'm not a dealer just someone in the market for a good reg....

No, I was not talking about Atomic specifically, though they do cost more than I think is necessary to pay for a good, serviceable regulator. If I were in the market for a new regulator at this point, I would go for an Edge Epic or an Aqua-Lung Titan. But this merely reflects my personal criteria and choices.

Just wondering which one of those is better than your experience with HOG?

I dive a HOG rig & my wife dives an Edge & we are friends with the owner of our LDS who is a ScubaPro/SubGear dealer. We actually both use the XP10 dive computer. But having experience with both of them I personally don't view one as better than the other.

I like the price point of HOG, true, but what got me was their customer service. From the top down, I have had the best of experiences with HOG & their dealers & I have used 3 different dealers to make my purchases. (DRIS, Jim Lapenta, Dive Gear Express)

So anyway, just genuinely curious as to why you thought one was superior to the other.
