Just took Roatan off my bucket list. Too many other places to dive that are safe and are not hostile to north americans.

i live in an upscale "safe" neighborhood in chicago but after two muggings that involved the victims being shot (after they'd turned over their cash and valuables) within 3 blocks of each other a couple of weeks ago, does that make my chicago neighborhood "hostile" to north americans.
roatan is not hostile to north americans, that is a ludicrous statement.

That's too bad. What you don't see and understand here is that, for the regular SCUBA tourist, Roatan has so far proven to be fairly harmless.

When the real facts of this latest incident come out~ will you possibly become less fearful? It's up to you.

A few months back, the big dust-up was over some poor Canadian diver who got popped. A few days later, the whole story came out. Although an entirely different picture appeared, still, many people were frightened. True enough, no one needs to get croaked, but you up your chances by being 8 miles from a tourist area, in a bar at 2 am, then leave it with two crack whores to buy drugs off the main road in a wooded area.

Before that, the big scare was over the drug related killings on the East end, some 15 miles away from even the least traveled resorts. In law enforcement, we would look at what happened there and say "win-win". The right people met the right people and hijinks ensued.

Then, a former Hollywood stunt stand-in actress got killed. Oh, the terror! Turned out to be the result of a lesbian three-way love triangle.

Don't forget the SCUBABoard uproar over the husband and wife- he got shot while they were looking at real estate. It came out later that they were doing this at 10pm and that she has a man on the side who happened to have a .38

And then there was the fear that your DM would attack you. That was due to two DMs getting macho territorial over a mooring and they went Thunderball on each other. I have seen the tourist's video- it was quite a wrestling match.

Cabbies sorting out a drug dispute... on the road in front of a big NW resort. Don't even think about going there! (?)

Capatin Vern? A local businessman who was thought to have money took a couple of local mopes out sailing.

Roatan survived the earthquake, Hurricane Mitch and don't forget about the big coup. The sky was certainly falling that day.

I sold my last interests in Roatan property some years ago, but I still come and dive. I see no future in living there and engaging in relationships that might turn negative. My homesite was on one of the most isolated, protected and secured estates on the island... but you have to go into town for groceries some time. About 10 years ago, I decided that this "island living" was not what I wanted to risk.

I'll stick to visiting and stay "inside the wire".

People decry this attitude I have- staying inside the resort. We all select our limits of exposure. I come to dive, not anything else. For those who seek "the island culture", they are only delusional- as there really is no such thing available to the casual visitor. That's why it's safer to just visit.

Remember Natalie Holoway in Aruba- just an innocent kid, right? Darwin in demonstration mode. Don't be stupid. If you don't yet know what stupid is... well, that says it all.

If you get into a Honduran homebuilt floatplane for $60 and have an exciting crash... what did you expect. Keep your eyes open for the upcoming submarine story.

Every where you might travel in paradise, there is a visible or un-seen line that the government puts between their cash cow (the resorts and you) versus the local bone heads. Same with Roatan- that's why West End/West Bay are so safe. Other places have to do what they decide to afford.

Security is seen everywhere in Central America. I watch newer visitors all atwitter when they see young uniformed men with machine guns at airports. This is the way it works. I see my fellow travelers exclaim in alarm while seeing the common sight of the man sitting in a chair, shotgun in his lap, in front of a closed gas station, bank, or you name it. Security and firearms are everywhere. Unlike the USA, they don't sit in their homes thinking that the cavalry will arrive with a 911 call. Who's the ignorant one in this equation?

Pick your resorts with care. There is an extreme disparity in the level of security. This goes for every destination island, just as it is visible on Roatan with a careful eye. Otherwise, you'll likely see nothing other than your Pina Colada at 10pm in the beach bar... not a bad thing either.

So, Kharon, what tropical paradise should I go to to avoid all of this frightening stuff ? (excepting the tank dive at Disney)

It certainly seems in the last 18 months to have grown especially hostile to non natives.

White Dive master shot in dispute over bicycle parking - resolution - nothing

White ferry owner hacked to death on his boat in Utila

White business owner throat slit found in home in Roatan

What's next? Or should I say Whom is next?

Maybe a safe place to vacation on a short term basis( subject to change), but it's looking pretty damn dangerous to move to, or own a business.

Looks like the have nots are taking lives of the haves. Being one of the haves, I'll pass.

..... I'll pass.

So... what will you "take"?

Where would you select to dive, instead?

:hm:

hey roatan man you missed one. remember the canadian father and daughter sailing last year near tela when they were attacked by "pirates" and the father was killed. now the authorities think the daughter did it to speed up her inheritance.

We were thinking of Roatan as our next dive destination. We will go back to Curacao instead.

Visiting the island exactly a week from now (first time there). Is Infinity Bay "inside the wire" ?
