the entire video was about: "Ocean photographer Juan Oliphant made the video and released it as a promotion for the HD camera company called GoPro."

I really don't think that someone off the street will view this as, Wow, I guess they're not the man eater that they are made out to be, and perhaps this fish has some intelligence, and it's existence is warranted. I think that is more viewed as, "Wow these sharks have been given a bad rep. and they are not the beast that people have made them out to be so I can just go and touch them." Wrong!!
Check this one out...so nice you need a speargun Michael Rutzen. Sharkman hitches ride on great white shark. - YouTube , or this one Shark Week - Riding a Great White - YouTube . I don't believe for one minute that she was without cage and others with spearguns or bagsticks.

Tony, I understand where you're coming from and have a lot of respect for your opinion - fundamentally I agree and would prefer if ppl didn't pull stunts like this. It's not cool.

Sadly however it may be necessary just to raise positive public profile.

Most newspaper reports about sharks talk about danger and terror and man eaters.

A few reports or images of humans and sharks getting on just fine - even if I'm not comfortable with the methods - is a welcome rebalancing.

You're really making a lot of assumptions there ...

If you believe you get what Rutzen is all about, from that 2min clip(very likely commercial, complete with SFX and dramatic score), no, not really ... Please, watch "Sharkman", and you will see the whole picture, so to speak ... Just to give you an idea, Hartman's approach - compared to what you'll see in the Rutzen docu - appears to be quite a bit more aggressive and 'dare devil', but I won't judge it, solely based on that one short clip.

The presence of cages and yes, spear guns? As I said before, these guys know Sharks, and are aware they're taking a calculated risk, ... I'd call those 'safety measures' "DIR for Shark freaks". And BTW, just seeing that kind of equipment in use should be enough to keep the average Joe from thinking about 'trying this at home'.

Now, ever seen "Sharkmen"?? That's the kind of sh=t, that gets me upset ...

Assumptions? Not really. They posted the clip and it is up to the viewer to make an opinion..which I did. For me, if I see a rather large fin in the water I will get my daughters out. I pay the animal due respect and allow them to carry on with their life and not alter their life in any way. I do not think that when an attack happens you should hunt down and kill the animal due to the actions of the victum.

The good news is that things are happening..I am in Mainland China right now and just watched a 4.5 minute TV NEWS!! story about the new move to Internationally protect MORE sharks...and the prblems that is going to create for policing the Fin Soup Market in Hong Kong..good fin/illegal fin??...way to go..that is really something for news here in China I have to tell you!!...so more people are thinking SHARK!! ..everyday!!

Yes, you are making assumptions, based on your perception of the video, in re to the effect on other viewers, and their reaction.

I did read your comment carefully and have no idea as to how you got there, in response to my post.

Getting hauled out of the water, onto a platform, measurements taken, blood drawn, a hole drilled into your dorsal fin to put a long-term transmitter on, ... hooked on a long line, tangled in a fishing net, being finned alive and thrown back in the ocean to drown, or having the 'good fortune' of being fed by divers and growing accustomed to it, ... life-altering.
