In response to a recent PM, please note that Dive Guide Watermanship requirements changed in Spring 2013. That's a problem with posting them on SB. They keep changing.

Anyway, here's what my training materials now tell me is required in the way of swim, etc. performance for the Dive Guide rating. It's noticeably less than previous standards.

Confined water tread 15 minutes no aids, no flotation
goal: perfect performance
pass: no significant difficulties

Confined water swim 800 yards in confined water with only mask, fins, and snorkel
goal: 15 minutes
pass: 20 minutes

Confined water breath-hold underwater swim 50 yards with only mask, fins, and snorkel
goal: 50 yards
pass: 25 yards

Unconscious diver rescue on the surface towing 100 yards full scuba kit on both parties
goal: 5 minutes
pass: 8 minutes

great info. thx
i may have asked you this already......are these standards are for SSI world wide or just u.s. ?? (specifically canada ??) or do you know that answer??

The course standards (at this level of detail) are not described in SSI's current "Global Training Standards" document. Instead, "the skills to be covered in the Dive Guide program are provided in the SSI Dive Guide Instructor Manual." So that could vary by region.

Your best bet is to locate a Canadian SSI shop and ask them. In my experience nobody from SSI reads or responds to these threads.

i am currently involved with my local SSI shop. that is why i am asking these questions. our shop has said we need to do an 800 meter swim (not yards) in 15 minutes or less to pass the guide program.

i think the previous "point system" you posted and this new system are more balanced and fair. they would give a better over all idea of a divers fitness level without giving them only one option that you either pass or fail.

i brought in the previous standards you posted and left them at the shop. i got no answer about them. i will bring these in and see what they say.

thx again

Yesterday night we had the first pool activity of the Dive Guide SSI course I'm doing. It was part of the watermanship test and part of the Rescue drills.
We swam 400 meters with swimsuit, swimgoogles and a lycra T-shirt.
Then we did 15 minutes static flotation, last 3 minutes hands out of water.
Then we swam 800 meters with fins, mask and snorkel.
Then diver towing, by the foot, aside and panicked diver by the tank valve.
Finally we did the underwater unconsious diver rescue (regulator back in the mouth, purge, remove weight belt, up to the surface, BC inflation, tow with breath assistance).
So far so good.
It seems that the new 2013 watermanship requirements has not been sent to South America yet.

Wow! I have been practicing the other test and am not ashamed to say I am somewhat relieved with this new test, since I can already do these activities.
