How about GUE/UTD Rec1? I know it all depends on the instructors. But a OW class with BP/W and long hose isn't necessary DIR. Again, I know it will depend on the instructor. DIR is not than just the gears.

He's already paid for the class with an LDS to get his wife certified and plans to come up for GUE Primer this fall. He's on the path, Aaron. :) Rec 1 is an extreme oddity around here and vacation time is the obstacle.

^this plus I feel that the rec 1 course would be a little pricy for somebody who may not end up liking it.

I understand where your coming from but you cant put a price on a quality course.

I'd give my left one to have learnt to dive in a Rec1 course. By the time I re-purchased all my kit and did Fundies it would have been cheaper in the long run by far, and I would not have had to unlearn so many bad habits. My diving today would be all the much better for it.

I understand it's not a practical course compared to the Rec agencies accelerated courses, but then again neither are the BSAC courses and they seem pretty popular in some countries!

While I do not want to put words in my new friend's mouth, I believe he is saying that his wife might not be interested in the diving system and he doesn't want to shell out $$$ to find this out. This is why Primer is a great step after certification through another agency.

And, Teller, I know that you know this....but some of my East and West Coast GUE/UTD folk tend to forget that we cannot just "drive up/down" to the next Rec 1 class, or any class for that matter, and drive back home for the night. We have to bring instructors to us, or go to them, so that adds to the overall cost of the class. All of the sudden, that Rec 1 class becomes double in price. That said, paying 4 times the amount of a typical PADI/NAUI/SSI general certification class becomes an issue if the diver doesn't agree with the system.

Side note: Plans are in the works to remedy that issue, but for now we accept and bring the classes to us, or go to them.

Safe diving all,

Dan

Ya I understand what you mean. Im on my way to FL now so hopefully I wont have to worry about that anymore. Ill miss TX though.

Precisely what Cyprian pointed out. If she really takes to diving, then we will both (hopefully) be in a primer class this fall. I know that in the long run its more time and money, but it's MUCH easier to split it up over a long period of time rather than all at once.

Besides, she had a less than ideal discover scuba experience last year and is a little timid already (although she seems to be warming up to it quite well) and the idea of taking a very expensive class on something she knows nothing about would not happen.

I cannot deny that I envy you, brother! Have fun in Florida and learn plenty. Go see the fine folks at Extreme Exposure. You don't be displeased. :)

Well said!

As prior military, myself, I get the appeal amongst military-types. If you ever want to come down and dive and talk shop, let me know!

+1

You know I'm right with you on that one.
