Not sure what conditions you dive in but at least a line cutter or shears. 20-30 bucks. Would hate to be tangled up in something without something to get myself out.

yeah a knife is a lot higher on my list than defog

Here's a little tip I learned the hard way; over time, you can save money by buying either a titanium knife, or one of the H-1 models by Spyderco (I bought a Salt 1 on Amazon, slightly over $60 I think), as opposed to buying a 'stainless steel' dive knife that will rust.

While some things made of stainless steel (e.g.: BCD D-rings) don't seem to rust, in my experience, dive knives do. And the $35 stainless steel dive knife isn't much cheaper than the $65 - $85 titanium or H-1 knife after the stainless rusts, and you get another, and it rusts, and you finally get what you should've gotten to begin with.

Unless you're meticulous with after dive maintenance.

Im a fan of Trilobites by EEZYcut. Small, comes with a velcro sheath, fits on anj webbing or in any pocket, cuts through anything, and comes with a handfull of replacement blades all for about $20-25.

More important than a knife is a Safety Sausage aka SMB. 6ft is better than 3ft when you want to be seen on the surface.
Lots of threads on this topic and its importance.

drrich2 is right about the SS knives rusting. My only problem with Titanium knives is that they are $65-$85 or more. A buddy of mine and I were diving last year when he lost his $100 titanium knife and didn't even know it until we got back to the beach. After that I just buy knives off of Craigslist for $15-$20 so that if I lose it it's no big deal. You mentioned getting your weights off of Craigslist. That is where I bought all my weights, I got soft weights, ~120 lbs and paid far less than I would have at the LDS. I picked up one set of weights (88 lbs) for just over a buck /lb. Just keep your eyes open and the weights will come around, you will see knives on there quite often too. I will also second the trilobyte and/or shears as well. Currently my wife and I carry a knife and a pair of EMT shears and I am going to get a Trilobyte for my wife and I next.

I agree with the Trilobyte; I dive one, and a knife. The Trilobyte blade isn't titanium or H1, but doesn't seem quick to rust so far, and the blade can be replaced. In a pouch on my BCD webbing, it's so small, thin & 'low foot-print' that it's almost not even there, unless I need it. And it's easy to pull the velcro strap, pull it out and get to work. I bought mine from Jim Lapenta, who posts on the forum, and there are a number of vendors carrying them.

As for the Spyderco Salt 1, Spyderco makes a number of H1 knives, and I'm not saying the Salt 1 is better than the others; just that I got tired of comparing them online and settled on it. Here it is on Amazon, for $64.18. You can get different colors, serrated vs. non-serrated blades, larger vs. smaller H1 knives, etc...

If you read on the forum, I think you'll find a lot of people believe that, if you get a knife, you don't need a 'Crocodile Dundee special' strapped to your leg. Also, some people prefer a blunt tip, so if you drop it you're less likely to stab your foot, and less likely to poke yourself handling it.

Oh, consider getting a scuba tool and a save-a-dive kit (fin strap, mask strap, o-rings) - mainly so if you have a tank or regulator 1'rst stage hose connection o-ring failure, you can replace the o-ring. I had one or two o-ring(s) fail on my reg. on a Bonaire trip; easy fix if you've got the stuff.

A lot of people prefer spring straps; you may want to get a pair.

Decide whether you want to be able to have your computer log dives, and download them to your computer to maintain an electronic logbook (which I greatly prefer), including profiles. And if air-integrated, it can record start & end pressures, too.

Richard.

What kind of BCD are you looking to get? Something with integrated weights may well obviate the need for weightbelt, as well as inform what type (soft vs hard weights) as well as shape/size of weights. Also, a BP/W could potentially reduce the amount of weight needed.
