Last I heard, EAD had nothing to do with narcosis and everything to do with NDL.

:D yes

You're right, it is the Equivalent Narcotic Depth (END), that's misleading for nitrox. NOT EAD.

IIRC - there used to be a Nitrox "Adventure Dive" version of the course that could be done as part of the AOW course. The card explicitly stated 32 and 36%. The adventure dive used only the first section of the Nitrox book.

There still is an adventure dive. They need to buy the manual and its the first dive and tank analysis. Max 30m, ppO2 1.4. It doesn't give them a card or qualify to do anything though.

There is also "discover nitrox" thing which ultimately qualifies nothing as well.

Right, and at least the SSI Nitrox course doesn't get into END at all. In fact they explicitly state that there is no evidence suggesting that Nitrox is any less narcotic than air.

padi and ssi do a VERY BASIC course for just single mixes 32% 36% (no tables and single set computer ) waste of money courses lol

What PADI course are you referring to?

I just checked my ANDI Nitrox card and it also says "May use Nitrox mixtures of 32% and/or 36% to 30m/100fsw performing No-Decompression-Required profiles with 2 cylinders and 2 gases". I guess I never looked at it that closely till now.

The two agencies I'm an instructor for teach 21-40% and 23-40% respectively for basic nitrox. Neither one requires the student to do a dive (I do though). Being able to calculate EAD makes the process of using regular air tables pretty painless, and most computers are programmable these days anyway.

As to the comment about Miami having a lot of dive shops.. Not as many as they used to. I believe the number is down to less than 10 now, and with the recent opening of Divers Direct on Le June and US1, the pressure on the small mom and pops will just get worse.

Supposedly PADI used to have a dumbed-down Nitrox curriculum for 32% and 36% only, calling those mixes Nitrox I and Nitrox II respectively. I only know that from hearsay though, and don't know how long ago that was, but supposedly that program was a "spectacular failure".

Lord I wish this was a joke but something tells me you're serious. Discover nitrox?
