Annoyed by silent people, but also annoyed when they talk... you just can't win with Super DM

That's about the size of it and now he wants to win at Top Trumps as well. Apparently he has a DM card and I can't beat that as it is clearly the toppermost qualification in the world! Can you beat him? I think you've been invited to play along too.

I have learned, maybe somewhat unfortunately, that as a dive professional it is usually necessary to work to the lowest common denominator until divers prove reliable, competent and capable of returning from the dive alive and well. As has been noted in previous posts, not everyone is forthcoming about their experience, comfort level or even the time of their last dive. It is incumbent on all dive pros to ensure safety first. While a diver may declare that they are a direct descendant of Neptune or Aquaman, we have no way to verify that without direct observation. When one is on a boat that caters to many levels of divers one should at least be civil while they establish their credentials. No one can read your mind and the pro has responsibilities, even if you signed a waiver. BTW even though the waiver may include language to bar suits by heirs or relatives, it has very little legal standing for those people. Anyone can sue anyone, anytime. Even if the pro wins, what was the cost financially and emotionally?

That's the job of the instructor that signed the OW card.

If the diver has a valid card, that's all that's necessary.

You've been on this board for long enough that both of us know that would be true in a perfect world but doesn't really work in practice (sadly).

Back on topic... IMHO both sides of the Dive Pro Dive customer relationship have some justification for complaint. This thread is supposed to be about allowing the DM to have their say and the rest of us to listen for a change.. seems pretty fair to me to allow them their :soapbox:

This thread is starting to remind me of all the times I am trying to listen to the DM's dive brief while people on the boat continue to make so much noise it is hard to hear. I'll do the same thing here I have done on a few boats "*clears throat* "Excuse me.. would you mind quieting things down a bit so I can hear what the DM has to say? I want to get the most out of my dive and I figure that hearing what he is saying will help me."

Actually, it can work just fine. "No DM in the water" causes divers to be responsible for their own dives.

I work on a dive boat in the NE for the warmer parts of the spring, summer & fall and people just do their own dives with no DM. I'll give the dive briefing, remind everybody to come back before they're out of air, and wish them a great dive.

Because they're diving with just a buddy, they understand that nobody else is responsible, and choose safe, appropriate dives.

This might mean that they hang out in 12' of water and watch the fish or strap on all the tanks they own for a dive to a hundred-something feet.

Divers become amazingly appropriate, responsible and focused when there's nobody "keeping them safe".

To those upset about the "change of topic":

These perceived actions have more than one point of view, and a DM's analysis isn't the only possible vantage point. Would it be better if this thread were a giant bitching thread with little discussion? I think both sides add to the discussion, and simply because a single DM somewhere was once bothered by it doesn't mean it's a bad habit for divers.
