Sorry, can't help it, this is making me laugh, but it *would* be painful for the consuls to be dragged along the reef and bottom:

"consul[ kon-suhl ]noun
1. an official appointed by the government of one country to look after its commercial interests and the welfare of its citizens in another country."

Perhaps you mean console? Although English is tricky, console could mean:

"verb (used with object) [con·soled, con·sol·ing.]
1. to alleviate or lessen the grief, sorrow, or disappointment of; give solace or comfort: Only his children could console him when his wife died.

noun
1. a television, phonograph, or radio cabinet
2. the control or monitoring unit of a computer, containing the keyboard or keys, switches, etc."

Anyway thanks for the laugh.

LMAO!!!! Haha! That is very funny. There are a few consuls I would like to drag across a reef in this country. :) Thank you for pointing that out. I didn't even realize it. LOL!!!! Glad you enjoyed the laugh

Dumpsterdiver you need to use some common sense. People remove masks when they do not need to. Of course, you can remove your reg to spit something out, you can remove your mask to clean it. You should never remove either just for the sake of removing it. If you do not have enough air to leave the reg in your mouth while you swim back to the boat or the shore, I would question someone's diving ability. There is no need to ever do this unless it is preplanned. For example, swimming out from the shore to a predetermined descent spot. What I am talking about is when a person comes up near or away from their boat and instead of leaving their reg in their mouth and mask on their face, they remove them. Divers who do this on my boat soon do not get invited back, I have no need to end up with a dead diver because they swallow water when swimming back on the surface.

31 students ?? holy crap !!

Holy crap is right, but we did have 4 instructors and 5 DM's. Still made for a long weekend.

You may tell them to secure the gear, and I'm sure you did before all that happened, but some people only learn, or trust what they have been told, after things happen. Maybe they won't forget next time.

Better still, never take your mask off till you are back on dry land or on the boat. There is no need, ever, to take off before then. In fact, there are multiple problems that can occur if you take off in the water. Lose it, get water in your eyes, cannot see properly and more. Same with reg, never take out until you are on land or the boat.

seems like over kill but to each his own. In my experience here in SoCal, when I come up reg comes out and is clipped off and mask comes off. I can't imagine doing the surface swim to/from the anchor line or shore with my reg in and mask on.

On the surface in high choppy waves (3+ feet) I prefer to keep the reg in. If its calmer I prefer to remove it. Getting on the boat I leave the mask on and the reg in until I have both feet planted firmly on the deck of the boat. I have slipped off the ladder and gone under so there weren't any surprises.

mate i bhave to tell you then that i probably wouldn't be invited back on your boat. :)
I dunno why but salt water in my eyes doesn't worry me at all. An fogged up mask annoys the beejeebers outa me though.
So on a hot day i'm comfortable doing a descent with my mask in my hand.

I will assume they weren't all at once, but staggered as smaller groups. I had 23 students in the same day last month, but it took from 8am to 9pm to get through them all.

I wouldn't be invited back either. after a dive I like to do the long schlep back to shore on my back, relaxing. Sometimes I will use my snorkel sometimes not, I would never waste air on a surface swim. As for securing gear, I would say, make sure your dive knife is secured in the sheath. I have found more lost knives than anything.
