jaidirii, this isn't a stupid record. It's the deepest dive on Open Circuit. It's the deepest non-saturation dive. It's drastically different than decompressing over two weeks in a dry chamber with TV and internet.

I agree this isn't a stupid record. It silly at best! It achieves nothing ...Ooh wait, his balls is bigger than mine. Respect to the dumb.

it is ego. I have seen it over and over again. There are divers already doing this on a regular basis they just aren't into self promotion and are doing it with a goal other than "fame" and "glory".

Don't commercial divers use umbillicals rather than SCUBA? If you're going to lump it all together, then those commercial divers are real wusses. The real record should be considered to be 11,521m set in 1960 by Jacques Piccard and Lt. Don Walsh. Seems silly to do so to me...


Personally, I also think this is really cool. I can't wait to read about how things went and maybe see a video or two.

Don't forget James Cameron! He went back down to Marianas and had Don Walsh on board the support vessel for nostalgia.

There are different levels of diving. Commercial divers, as someone mentioned, do what they do because they get P-A-I-D to sit on their bum and watch TV in a plush little den while decompressing. That's not realistic nor feasible for the "sport" divers (using that to denote non professional divers, not divers limited by training agency depth barriers).

Some people care about the depth for the sake of the record, others for the exploration it represents and man's ability to conquer his (or her) environment. The day we stop pushing limits is the day our sport starts dying. This is true in most "recreational endeavors".

This will cease to become news when a man on open (or closed) circuit finds a way to fin along the challenger deep. Until then, bottoms up!

This bothers me. Not your post - but their PR team, who is posting that he's on his way up, but won't comment on status, or provide deco stop updates, etc.

You're publicizing the dive and it seems there's a good bit of money behind the attempt. The least you can do is have a support diver with a camera linked to topside broadcasting the deco on a live webcam - I mean, is that so hard!?!? I'm exaggerating of course, but a little info would keep us all more excited!

They posted an update to twit earlier.

His dive has been confirmed by the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS official adjudicator as the Deepest Scuba Dive (Male)

On the same twit page it appears he didn't make 350:

So he surfaced and was healthy. That is really nice, but I hope they will tell more about diveplans, logistics, how they organised the dive.
