Its definitely not the cheapest place on the island, but in my spreadsheet of about 20 places in Bonaire its definitely pretty middle of the road. It is more expensive than DiveHut, but cheaper than Captain Don's, Coral Paradise, Buddy Dive, or Sand Dollar if you stay in one of the "standard" cottages instead of the deluxe ones. We stayed there for two weeks for our 10th anniversary, and its not a luxury resort by any means, but very intimate and comfortable.

If you want to be on the water, a Den Laman studio is a great value, but I can't vouch for the bed!

Yeah, I've heard Bamboo Bali is one of the few places that really qualifies as upscale--and even then, I don't think it's really a "high-end resort" as resorts go. We have eyed it enviously from across the street where we poor people stay

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

Am strongly inclined toward Bamboo Bali (the beds have me sold, diverjen!).

I see Bamboo Bali is associated with WannaDive… any thoughts on WannaDive? As I mentioned this is our first visit. Thanks all.

My biggest reason for changing accommodations was simply unfamiliarity with Bonaire and desire to try more than one for future reference. We'll see if my dive partner agrees.

I think that one of the things first time visitors don't get - until they've been on-island for about 20min - is just how small a place Bonaire really is. And just how much of it you'll cover driving from divesite to divesite. There's not really a need to change accommodations "to get a taste of another part of the island" in any real sense. The logistics - and half-day of diving missed - associated with packing up, moving, and unpacking wouldn't be worth it to me. Plus there's the fact that, no matter where you stay, it takes a few days to get the lay of the land, understand how certain things work, etc. Simple things like what time the 6am breakfast really starts, where they keep the bug spray behind the bar, how to pronounce the name of the cute Dutch girl working at the dive shop, etc. You'd need to re-do that whole learning curve too if you moved.

I'm a fan of Caribbean Club Bonaire. A bit further afield... which is fine with me. Especially if you're planning shore diving. Once you put everything in the truck and go, it doesn't really matter where you're staying since the island is so small. The only downside to CCB is that it is not on the water so there is no "walk out of your room, put your fins on, dive the house reef" capability there. Neither is there a hopping on-site bar or restaurant, nor the ability to walk to any. If those things are important to you, CCB is NOT the place for you. But, if you're looking at CPR, shore diving isn't exactly "steps from your door" close, you've got no onsite bar/restaurant at all, and although there's a few spots within walking distance you're still driving to town... and everywhere else.

My buddy (tajkd) and I spent a week a Caribbean Club Bonaire in December and enjoyed it immensely. (Here's his tripadvisor review: Has almost everything you need - Review of Caribbean Club Bonaire, Kralendijk, Bonaire - TripAdvisor) Our week-long package in a 1br apt at CCB was $691pp which included room, breakfast, unlimited nitrox, and truck rental. The significant savings there vs other places was more than sufficient compensation for lack of a handy house reef... which would be the only thing I'd benefit from staying elsewhere.

We were in room 211, which is right across from the dive shop and tank corral. Could basically back out truck up to our covered patio (which was enormous) and gear up and go. Since they are affiliated with Buddy Dive, you can avail yourself of tanks at their drive-thru fill station as well.

There's really not a bad dive op on the island. WannaDive gets as good marks as any. Three locations. Having one down south of town (Windsock) is great so you don't need to drive back up through town for fresh tanks if you want to stay down that end of the island.

The only true downside to someplace like Bamboo Bali from a diving perspective is not having the dive op on-site. Not a huge deal... but to me I like to pack the truck all at once in the morning - gear, tanks, food, etc - and go. It's easier if your bed, your gear, and your tanks are all in the same place.

We stayed at Diver's Paradise and it was great.
You can conveniently park right in front of your apartment, and they have individual dive equipment storage rooms. Also, the apartment was really well-equipped and the bed was amazing. John is a great host.

As a 2nd resort? You know it's basically across the street from Coral Paradise right?

Wannadive has a good reputation for years. They're at Eden Beach which is just south of Den Laman/Bari Reef also have a shop in town and another tank exchange at Windsock Beach south of town.

If you walk south from Coral Paradise, Habitat is your dive operator as mentioned previously. Buddy Dive is past it, they have the drive-thru tank pickup. They also have a shop at Belmar condos south of town. Past Buddy Dive is Sand Dollar Condos, Den Laman, a big field then Eden Beach.

The best choice for that though is probably Dive Friends. Their shop just north of Coral Paradise (I think it's north) is a shore dive location only (the Cliff dive site) but they have about 4 others also. One on the north side of Bari Reef at the Sand Dollar, one at Port Bonaire south of town and another I can't recall. They do tank exchanges at any of them and their shop at Sand Dollar is streetside at the entrance to Sand Dollar.

If I was looking for something different on Bonaire, I'd stay somewhere south of town. It's much quieter, all the better southern shore dives start five mins. (or less) south of Belnem. There's virtually no food in that area though and I've just named all the dive shops that are south of town in this thread. More condo style resorts on that side also. Coco Palm/Casa Oleander is one option, small villas that are affordable since they're across the street from the water. And a little older. Buddy Dive at Belmar is walking distance.

Maybe BelAir condos is an option for you. It's only about a dozen? condos waterfront. Belair Bonaire oceanfront condo's They are all 2br's though. Or possibly Windsock - across the street from Windsock Beach/Wannadive's tank exchange. Also 2 BR.. Here's a thirty second summary. With pictures.

Most stores/restaurants are in Kralendijk. Most dive sites are north or south of town - there's a couple sites in town but they're not the best ones. There's a cluster of dive resorts within a mile or two of town to the north - the ones I listed in my previous post sequentially. Almost all the dive sites run along the west coast, there's also about 25 surrounding Klein Bonaire - a small island you can see from just about anywhere. From the Coral Paradise area it's just across the channel. The northern sites often are rougher entries, sometimes over ironshore paths. The two "Leap" sites really are. And 1000 Steps is 64 stone steps down to the water - I counted every one. As you move farther north the sites spread out a little more - eventually leading to Karpata. Continue north and you'll get to Slagbaai Park - the north end of Bonaire. There's about 3-4 dives there but they're advanced. And a long ride on a bad road. Buddy Dive goes up there weekly on a boat trip.

Before you get there, you'll have to commit to a one way road that requires you to circle back thru the small town of Rincon inland first. About a 20-30min. depending on where the goats are. Add 10mins. if they're moving them when you go thru.

South of town is a lagoon. It used to be more wild, now Waterlands has reclaimed part of it for villas. Past that is the airport then Belnem - the condo/villa area I mentioned. The southern dive sites start just south of Belnem, there's the Hooker wreck, probably a dozen+ sites, the Salt Pier, another 1/2 dozen sites then the slave huts. Past there most of the dives are considered advanced due to current. They continue down intermittently all the way to the south end of the island where you'll find the Lighthouse. There's also a Flamingo Preserve, sometimes the birds are there. Other times they're in the Salt Pans near the pier or most often at Gotomeer Lake on the road to Rincon.

You can get a pretty good sense of Bonaire both above and below water here: Bonaire Panoramas Reference his map to see where the Panoramas were shot.

One you might find useful: View Rooftop View on page 2. When it opens zoom over the tall palm tree slightly to the left. The flat green island is Klein Bonaire. Now move slightly more left - just before the block wall construction the boats in the water are at Habitat Dive Resort - the closest operation to Coral Paradise. Continue to left to the the clump of trees in the distance - just to the left there's a light green 2 peaked building with a red roof. Pretty sure that's Coral Paradise. Continue around to the north and line up on the third tallest peak in the distance. I'm reliably sure the light tan building directly in front with the gray roof and small extension on one side is Dive Friends. The dive site Cliff is off their property.

I have no idea what is across the street from anything or where any dive shop is relative to anything else. It's my first trip there; that's why I posted here to ask for recommendations.

+1 for Caribbean Club. It's comfortable and quiet with no thrills or spills. The penthouse room 101 has a beautiful panoramic view of the Caribbean sea.

This is kind of short notice for a trip to Bonaire, but I will put in my 2 cents...

This will be my fourth trip to Bonaire (June 13-20 2015). We stayed at Buddy Dive twice and the Plaza Hotel once... I would put Buddy Dive over the Plaza without a doubt.

Our condo was closer to Buddy's house reef for diving and the drive-through tank pickup was easy and fast. Buddy has two tank stations, close to house reef and drive through pickup...

The Plaza required a medium walk from our condo and the tank situation required a 1/4 mile walk from tank pickup to house reef dive.

That said, we now own a timeshare at Buddy Dive (lucky eBay purchase), but this trip, I will be at the Caribbean Club. I have never been there, but the reviews are positive for the recent visits.

I will post more about CClub in a new post once I have experienced their hospitality

Overall, for the quick booking I made, Bonairepros.com did a great job of getting me everything from; landing on Bonaire, transfers to and from the resort, Dive and drive package to breakfast included for the week, into a one price package... Kudos to them

So much great information. I really appreciate the time you took to post this. I've have just a little (ha!) OCD when it comes to trip planning unless I've been somewhere before. Again, many thanks! :yelclap: I'll finalize bookings today and I'll be enjoying those panoramic shots until September.

Okay, here's a little off-the-top-of-my-head quickie guide to Bonaire in terms of what's where. I'll try to get it right.

Pull up on online map of Bonaire with dive flags. Okay, only the west coat matters to you for now. Look at the dive site listings; up north will be Karpata. That's as far north as you'll likely dive (unless you do a site in the park; never mind for now). Down south, Red Slave or Sweet Dreams are about as far south as you will go. So, that's the stretch of Bonaire to concern yourself with.

To the north, it's hilly & bushy (with scads of thorny plants); in places even mountains. To the south, it's about pancake flat & you can often see a long way. A road hugs the coast.

See that little island offshore, Klein Bonaire? Okay, across from it is the capital, Kralendijk. The only city/town you're likely to care about on your 1st trip. You'll shop around a little & eat out there some. Get some souvenirs.

To the southern end of Kralendijk, you'll find Divi Flamingo; I believe the Plaza is a bit farther (never stayed at either; drove by both).

As you leave Karlendijk headed north, you'll pass a row of popular dive resorts. From south to north:

1.) Sand Dollar (condo.s; onsite op. choice of Dive Friends or Bonaire Dive & Adventure; house reef Bari Reef is nice & very popular).

2.) Buddy Dive Resort - nice house reef. I've stayed there 3 times.

I think your Coral Paradise is sandwiched in between 2.) & 3.).

3.) Captain Don's Habitat - also nice house reef.

Head north about a city block length. Dive site is the Cliff. 2 Resorts I think are waterfront; Hamlet Oasis and Beachcomber Villas. Bambo Bali across the street.

On up north a ways is Caribbean Club Bonaire, up the road from the Oil Slick Leap dive site. Farther out from town than Buddy Dive Resort & not right on the water, but cheaper.

There are other places. I've stayed at Dive Hut when I wanted to save money. I've stayed at Eden Beach Resort under prior management; I liked WannaDive just fine for a dive op.

I apologize if I misremembered & got any locations wrong. Most of these places I've at least drove by or visited; I've never seen Bamboo Bali that I recall.

Richard.
