I was recently in Cancun and did one of those intro to scuba classes and I loved it. Now that I'm back home, I'm looking to get certified.

I was asking my wife if she would also get certified so that we can dive together and be each other's buddy. She is open to it, but she did raise a concern about us doing this together while having 2 kids (14 and 10). I know it's a bit morbid but she's concerned about something happening to both of us at the same time.

I know I've seen posts where spouses both dive, but I was wondering....do you all dive as each other's buddy or is it better to buddy dive with someone else even if you are diving at the same time in the same location?

I guess I'm trying to understand what the "best practice" is for spouses that dive

My wife and I dive together EVERYTIME we dive. Our youngest is 10 so I understand you wifes concern. But, life is too short to play the "what if" game. The likelyhood that you would both die in a scuba accident are so slim as to not even be a concern IMHO.

Nothing better than having your best friend (spouse) with you to enjoy all the experiences that scuba brings.

Thanks KevinNM and Yoda-X. I'll work on trying to put her mind at ease.

Get your kids certified and dive as a family.
Min age is 12 I think so the 10yo will have to wait a bit. To the OP: how often the 2 of you ride in the same car? Statistically the most dangerous part of a dive is the drive to/from dive site and/or airport.

^^^That.

I believe that the age at several agencies dropped to 10 a number of years back.

If your wife is just getting into diving you may want to wait on getting kids certified. Let her get proficient and comfortable with diving before you add the stress of worrying about your kids diving also. Just my opinion. But, as a starter you could get the youngest involved in the PADI seal team. Fun way to get them involved and let mom watch them and get comfortable with their abilities before they get "certified".

I agree...I can't see all 4 of us getting certified at the same time, but once my wife and I do it and have some experience under our belt, then we can look to get the kids involved.
