Hi everyone! I am new to this forum and, to Scuba Diving in general.

I qualified a few weeks ago and am now planning to go again within the next few months. All I want to find out is, if I don't have a dive computer/watch, how do I time my safety stops? I am planning on getting a dive computer before I go dive again, but just incase I don't, I would like to hear your thoughts.

Thank you all! Hope to hear soon.

How were your safety stops and dives timed and planned during your training course?

Why do you need a safety stop? Answer that and I will tell you how...

How do you plan to track your nitrogen loading?

If not a computer then you must have a timing device (watch) and tables!!!

My instructor timed the safety stops with his computer.
I did do planning with tables, so I knew how long I needed to stop for and at what depth, but I had no way to time it and obviously I won't be doing every future dive with my instructor.

You will need a dive watch, a depth gauge, and a good set of tables at a minimum, if you wish to dive safely. I suppose you could do the safety stop by counting "one Mississippi, two Mississippi, etc.............one-hundred and eighty Mississippi". You didn't mention it, but do you have a depth gauge and a set of tables? Enjoy your new diving experiences - safely.

Look into a Casio G-Shock - you can even keep wearing it when you get the computer as a backup. Mine was about $60 7-8 years ago and still goes on every dive I do. I've also worn it till just recently as a daily watch. The backlight glows bright enough to read u/w at night when you press the button. I have a previous version of one like this: G-SHOCK DW9052V-1 Black | Casio

I don't know of any agency that doesn't at a minimum require a time-keeping device & depth gauge to go with using table.

I once heard that 20 years ago, computers vs human (watch, depth gauge, tables) that computers were more unreliable.
But now, it's the humans who err, not the computers. The computer is a complete record of your dive(s).

However in this day and age of cheap technology, many dive computer options out there in the $200 range.
A new manufacturer, Deep6, is coming out in the spring with a $140 computer, cheap enough to have a spare as a backup.

In perspective, compare that to the cost of your smart phone which you change almost yearly.

That just shows how little respect the agencies have for divers. I often dive with nothing but an SPG. Of course the conditions must be right. But it is quite easy to safely conduct multiple shallow dives where the only limiting parameter is your gas supply.
