Sometimes a "rumor" is actually the observations made by a well qualified on-scene observer who feels that they cannot state this for the record. And sometimes it is completely made up stuff by someone who is out to get someone.

And unless you are deeply involved in this and know the people involved it's really hard to judge what is what.
Well, when you post, you can either day "there is a rumor going around that [whatever]", or you can say, "I spoke to someone who was at the scene and part of the recovery crew. He does not want to go on the record himself, but he told me [whatever]."

Perhaps a summary is in order.

I know some of the toxicity you are experiencing ,and, as you know, I am experiencing some of it there as well.

It's your Facebook page. IMNSHO, you should feel free to unfriend the unfriendlies, or put their posts in a hole for awhile. Your Facebook page is yours, it's not Scubaboard or a Facebook Group page. If you're getting unfriendly action on a Group, put it on hiatus for awhile. As you know from experience, "this too shall pass".

Frankly, it's hard for me to concieve of anyone giving you a hard time. You're a reasonable, thoughtful, knowledgeable person. Must be folks with a chip on their shoulder for some reason.

I want to comment on the issue of rumors.

In post #160 I posted a true story about people who intentionally spread false information about a diving accident because they wanted to hurt the reputation of someone they did not like. It happens.

When you post a rumor, it has a similar effect to posting a fact. People believe it, and they spread it. When they spread it, they often don't describe it as a rumor. It gets believed, and there will be people who believe it (and repeat it) long after it has been proven to be false.

I'm a bit late to the thread.

My position(s) have been covered for the most part by other posters.

Something did pop into my head though and I submit it for consideration.

If members are concerned about wading through speculative posts to find true updates (and as some have suggested a sticky or some such summarizing, which was dismissed as too much work for staff), could a wiki type page be created, where members are free to add updates (not speculations)?

Hoping she comes out of this ok.

I don't want to sound completely asinine but it's these kind of non-contributory inane comments that make this section worthless.

Pete asked earlier how we could reform A&I. Having mods remove these would go a long way toward that end.

Ok, so when I first read the incident my thoughts were: What a stupid mistake, how could she do that, what was she thinking, how many dives did she have, was she scared, where was her buddy, was there a medical incident? At this point there was little information besides it was a rapid ascent. Instead of posting all the above questions that were in fact very inane and non-contributory I posted my last thought because after all, these are people we are talking about.

Honestly if enough people feel that this type of comment is way out of line and they push that report button there will be some sort of reaction. It is clearly stated in the special rules: Discussions should only be about the causes, theories and remedies for these accidents. Off topic posts or those with off topic comments may be removed without notice. Condolences, including comments indicating surprise and indignation, should be kept to the Passings Forum,

I think what I will do in the future is if someone has already posted a well wish, or condolence I could simply "like" that comment so the thread isn't cluttered- NOT said in snarky tone of voice.

my guess:, tridacna might have had a bad day :grouphug2:.

The linear ("flat") display style of SB is great for most forums, but maybe A&I is the exception.

Sites like Reddit use a threaded display style and weight post visibility by number of upvotes. Despite the occasional outlier, highly speculative and/or BS posts most likely won't get upvoted, and even if they do, any replies and bickering get confined to one branch of the thread.

Unfortunately, changing the display style on this forum only might not be possible without modification of the backend code.

No. Please, no. Please, please, please.

I'm on a forum that use the threaded display style. It sucks major bowling balls whenever you get more than a couple of dozen posts to a thread. It becomes completely impossible to see what's new, and who has said what when. The only advantage of a threaded display is to follow who's replying to whom, which is just as easy in a threaded display if people follow proper quoting practice.

Agreed.

Much of the discussion here regarding changes to the A&I forum begins to sound a lot like: "if it ain't broke, you aren't trying".

Not really. I'm just tired of peepz wishing condolences, prayers and wishes to people they don't know and who never even visit the board. It's disingenuous and contributes nothing to the discussion.
