I have been to brac, I have been to Little Cayman, lc blows brac out of the water. LC is what brac was 20 years ago. We prefer Southern Cross but that's just us. Hate to recommend it since we love that lack of people

Oh we never tip toe.. sometimes you have to put a DM in their place... they work for you! I'm always quick to point out that when I pay for a tank I use a tank, and my wife and I typically go over an hour. We are going to Brac in May. I'll post a full report and video,,, Thanks Magellan

You wouldn't by any chance remember the dive master's name, would you? We're on our way to CBBR next month, and if we can avoid a rude, uptight dive master, all the better!

We went to Cayman Brac Beach Resort (?) several years ago, and really enjoyed it. Dive op was Reef Divers - still got the hat. We got a good deal on a rental car and spent a couple afternoons shore diving from a site that I think was an old hotel, because the iron shore was cut back to form a pool. Anyway, we were able to reach the Russian shipwreck from there, although not for long, but that wasn't really the point. diving out from the shore allows you to take your time, and catch some shallower water creatures.

My only complaint was one of the divemasters was really restrictive on our dive time off the boat, and just all-around uptight. She was rude to my wife several times too. It kinda get's old having to tiptoe around somebody on your vacation... But, I wouldn't let that keep me from going back, people come and go.

We've never had issues with rude or demanding divemasters at Brac Reef Divers. I do remember reading stories on SB about a inflexible divemaster from years ago, but I'm sure that she is long gone. We've dived with a lot of nice folks at CBBR and Barb is our favorite DM.

No such thing on Brac. The DM’s at Reef Divers and Scuba Shack are always courteous, helpful and respectful. They have boat policies they will enforce, like not leaning on the doors and diving with buddies, all in the name of safety and keeping the boat in one piece. They will take suggestions, weather permitting, on where you want to go. Good group of dive professionals on Brac. They are always safe and responsible. I’ve had hundreds of dives and they they have the best boats around. Cheers

I had a DM say "Trust me, i'm a professional!"

My reply? "So am I!"

:rofl3:

I just got back from the Brac 2 weeks ago. I stayed at CBBR and dove with Reef divers. The trip was amazing and diving was fantastic. Reef divers was awesome. Very thorough dive briefings with a map of site done before every dive. CBBR was awesome as well. Small very private resort. Rooms are really nice and food was excellent. Cayman Airlines however are a diff story. Small planes and they might not be able to fit everyones bags on the plane due to the weight. So I would strongly advise packing a change of clothes in your personal bag. Two couples on our trip, Cayman Air couldn't fit their bags on the plane and they didn't get to the resort until the next night. Also pack medicine and all your toiletries. Theres no real store on the Brac that I saw and everything at the resort was outrageously expensive...like 7-8 USD for 1 allergy pill.

If you go to the Brac I would recommend checking with whomever you dive with if one day they would take you over to Little Cayman to dive the Bloody Bay Wall. It's amazing! Even if it costs a few more dollars to make that trip I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Thanks for the report, glad that you had a good trip. The GCM airport is always challenging and now with the major construction and the record-breaking number of visitors during the high season it must really be bad.

Cayman is expensive but there are real grocery stores and shops on CB, like Kirkconnell's Market that are a lot cheaper than the resort boutique or the dive shop, see the link below.
Kirkconnell Market

You can use a free bicycle from the resort to visit the small convenience shops located between CBBR and the airport, and we always rent a car for a day to explore and enjoy the island.

The day trip to dive BBW off Little Cayman is a great experience, and Reef Divers at Little Cayman Beach Resort offers a similar trip in the opposite direction, for an extra fee they will take divers over to Brac to dive the Russian Frigate wreck, the Tibbetts.

I always carry-on medications, contact lenses, C-cards, swimsuits, some clean clothes and other essentials in my over-sized purse, because missing luggage can be a problem when visiting the Sister Islands.

You should try the Little Cayman Beach Resort next time!

My wife and I just returned from one week at CBBR and in our case, we were quite happy with the two AM tank dive package. From an airport perspective, GCM airport is still under renovation and Cayman Brac facilities accommodate up to and including jet service. On our way down, we were supposed to spend a couple hours at GCM then take a Twin Otter to Little Cayman, spend a couple hours there and then proceed to Brac to arrive around 1800hrs. The week before I got an itinerary change from Cayman Airways indicating leaving GCM at 1715 to arrive at Brac at 1800hrs and then this got change again the night before for a departure at 1815 instead. When all things were said and done, we did not take off until 2015 hours or so and arrived at Brac shortly before 2100hrs. The good news was that ground transportation (btw they only have three taxis on the island) was still waiting for us and upon arrival and check-in at CBBR, the staff handed us a care package the chef had prepared knowing that we were going to miss diner which closes at 2000 hrs. Very impressed.

Diving...due to our late arrival, we had to cramp all the formalities with the dive shop first thing in the AM in order to make our first two tank dives. Quite a hectic pace, considering that they were not expecting us (despite the fact bookings were made through the management office back in August 2017). Notwithstanding, we were able to sort it all out with the help of Janet. During our stay, the weather was generally cloudy and windy (North\North East) which resulted with 11 out of 12 dives being conducted South of the Island and the 12th one done just North of the western tip. No dives were cancelled but we got to experience a good swell and some white caps throughout the week. That's when you start to appreciate their 46 ft dive boat. Not quite sure how many divers they had while we were there but they used their three boats and we ended up being 12 on ours all week with the exception of 15 the last day. Lots of elbow room. Another thing I appreciated was having the choice to follow the divemaster or doing your own dive with your buddy. As such, you get a dive site briefing then you suit up and enter the pool. The divemaster is the last one to get in and the first one to get out. Normal profile for first dive was 110'/50 mins and 50'/60 mins for the second.

Fauna and flora...you can expect to see healthy corals (elkhorn, tubes, vase sponge, pillars and fans), great walls and friendly Nassau Groupers . During the entire week, we probably saw four or five reef sharks, some barracudas, few lettuce nudibranch and moray eels, fair share of caribbean lobsters and a couple of anemones. My wife had to wait for her last dive to finally see her turtles. Let's say a bit less than I was expecting and I don't know if this was due to the weather or not.

The resort...nothing but praises be it for the set-up, cleanliness, food and services. Being one of the few not diving in the afternoon, we felt we had the resort facilities to ourselves. No mad races to get a chair at the pool, on the beach or using one of the hammocks. Beach...great beach but nowhere to swim except the pool (superb) as there is very little water between the reef and the shore and even less so at low tide. Still great to watch the heron and aigrettes strut their stuff and fish.

Other amenities include bicycles that you can use free of charge. Very practical if you want to make a wine/liquor run to Big Daddy (located at the corner of the CBBR and airport roads...about 10 minutes biking). They have a very decent selection and provide a cheaper alternative.

Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay. If we happen to get back to this area, in all likelihood I would probably opt for LC based on the reviews I have read and to experience something a bit different.
