What's unclear about my post????

It just seemed odd to me that you would suggest her cancelling a planned trip because of one sketchy dive. I was just checking to see if perhaps you meant something other than it appeared.

Jackie:

Lots of good thoughts. You already learned that you can dive, and now you learned that you need to progress in smaller steps. And you will. You know this because you went from not diving to diving in the for you right sized steps and it worked. You heard about the great warm water diving in Thailand, that's why you are going... you know not to make your first few dives to record depths, a drift dive at a clipping current or a shark dive...

Small steps, small amounts of added anxiety to overcome not on every dive, but on dives where you are ready to overcome a little added something. So, off you go. Enjoy.

But do get your family in line... that really exiting stuff they want to dive... well, keep it simple for a few more dives. Talk it over with them. Even on a guided dive you are not immune to having taken too big of a step - as you found out. I am myself one of those hubbies who is a little too "ambitious" with new things for his wife. I try not to, but I do not always succeed.

So, the really big take-away: Be your own regulator. Nobody can do it for you. You are in charge of your dive. That's important and once engraving in your thinking it becomes a big part of why you learn to trust yourself to overcome what you got in... which after all is what is really needed to have a chance against anxiety.

Now, @Stoo gave some really good advice. Jackie, on the lighter side, what is he saying here...???
And finally, Mrs Stoo, who is my favorite body and...

Bwahahaha... Well there is that too, but that's a subject for a different thread. Well, a different forum altogether actually...

Try it another time when you feel more comfortable and dive with someone you trust. best thing is one to one.

No, you're right. I was just trying to make the point that it was colder than a lot of people are used too. I can't tell you how many times people I had friends who would visit and wanted to go swimming or diving, without realizing that it wasn't Cozumel.

You're correct and I would surmise that age plays a factor in that as well. As a dumb jarhead I thought nothing of swimming all day in the waters from SanDiego to LA with nothing on but some shorts. I wouldn't even think about doing that now without a wetsuit.

Thank you so so much everyone for the kind words and advice. After a 13 hour drive back home and a few days of being sick since, I feel much better lol. I unfortunately had to learn a very expensive lesson, and that is to know my limitations, and when to thumb a dive. I am by no means scared off though. In fact I'm more determined now lol. My family has been incredibly supportive, and we will be trying a couple more dives in Utah before we go to Thailand. I am trying to keep in mind that even though I panicked and called the dive, I was at least of sound enough mind to swim myself back to shore, because I made my boyfriend let me do it myself. Small victories right? I will definitely pace myself though, and not try so many new things at once. I will definitely try cold water dives in the future, but I'll get some good dives in beforehand! We may also be doing some diving in the Yucatán at the end of the year seeing as we have a house in Progreso. I've heard great things about diving out there! Again, thank you everyone for building my spirits back up and getting me more motivated. You are all such wonderful people and I truly appreciate all your help!

There's a lot of BS on SB ( nature of people and the internet) but its threads like these that make it all worthwhile. Enjoy your diving and let us know how it goes!

I have had friends come out to visit me from back home in Ohio. Some in the "winter" and as soon as we hit the beach they want to jump in and ask me to come along. I just tell them I will be out there in a minute after I secure our stuff.....then I sit back and watch as they find out just how cold the water is out here.

It shocked me when I moved here. People think because we have such gorgeous weather all the time that the water is warm but they don't realize where that water is coming from.

So I always try to get my friends to come out in the winter. It is the evil in me that likes to see them suffer for a minute.
