I agree with fmerkel. I got popped across my hand by a hydroid while filming. It took the same course of time to heal. An hour of pretty intense pain and then went away. A week later it reappeared. You could actually see the design of the hydroid pattern across my hand.

It was raised, red and itchy for weeks and finally went away on its own. Guessing steroid treatments might have hastened the healing but I didn't want to go that route.

I used Beadreux's butt paste on mine too FYI.....it cures all kinds of rashes etc by drying it out. Helped + cortisone cream.

Don't pee on it: use copious amounts of vinegar. I would apply it hourly until you kill whatever's still living. Encrusting fire coral does just that and can use the food it gleans from the host. Kill it. Kill it with vinegar.

Never tried vinegar. Tried that with Lion's Mane sting and it was useless. DAN has since pulled that recommendation.

Never tried urine. Easy to do and I'd certainly like to know if it works for this. Mostly I think it's a diver scam, but I don't have personal experience. FWIW fresh urine is essentially sterile and outside social considerations should not be an issue.

Pee on it works well on the boat - especially when you suggest it, then jump to your feet and begin to de pant yourself.........that few seconds of shock on the sufferors face is always worth it. :)

Stinging hydroids (the black fern-like animal in Cozumel) and Fire Coral are actually closely related--they are called hydrozoans. The are also related to the Portuguese Man o' War, which is also a hydrozoan and not a jellyfish.

Here is DAN's suggested treatment:

For the record, during my time of need I was, umm, well, fresh out of vinegar, yeah that's it, fresh out and couldn't find a drop anywhere. The dog ate my homework, the cat repacked my dive first aid kit and the island went dry for the 5 or 6 days I needed it. heh.

I certainly defer to those more informed and experienced as to better treatment methods, but I'm still sayin', it felt like a miracle.

Black fern-like stinging hydroid. Somewhere I have a picture of the great beast I tangled with. Barely brushed it with the top of my hand, which was wrapped around my ample belly.

Yeah it doesn't take much at all.........!!!!!! The caress of death is what it is lol!

Common misconception. Fresh urine is sterile to the person that produced it. My urine is sterile to me, but not to you.

The pee treatment only works; if the pisser has been drinking Coronas with lime.
