Hi,
I am one of those people who live with an avid, longtime diver. I got jealous watching him have so much fun and decided to join in. Actually, I started with two Discover Diving trips, one in Cozumel and the other in Playa del Carmen. So far, I have one beach dive and 5 open water dives under my weight belt! Woo Hoo! These dives were one of the most exciting, beautiful experiences I've ever had. Nothing like going to some of the best dive spots to start off my diving - I am a little spoiled already. That's saying something since I am 66 and have had some great life experiences along the way. Now I will be off to Puerto Vallarta for a couple weeks and plan to finish my certification there. Hoping for good visibility while we are there. I'm feeling pretty confident that I will be a card carrying diver when I return. I'd cross my fingers but then I wouldn't be able to clear my mask or push the buttons on my BC! :)

Good luck and enjoy, just remember to take your time on all skills - this is not a race. Just watch and follow Instructor and all will go well.

The certification is just a piece of plastic. I am a new diver and I have witnessed about 10 or so different instructors "certifying" people. they are not in the business of failing people. I have seen some people "pass" that had no business diving, let alone being near any body of water. Luckily, as you stated you live with a longtime diver. I would put more stock in them teaching you what you need to know versus relying on an "instructor" particularly at a vacation type dive process. Either way, good luck and happy diving!!

p.s. in regards to your lighthearted fingers crossed statement, when i was getting certified and going through training i was not allowed to use the power inflator button on my bc (except during the predive BWARF). If i wanted to add air i had to manually add air. this is probably just something that my particular instructor incorporated but it taught me that small air additions make big changes. its easy to add a whole bunch of air with the power inflator, but adding air manually under water is different ( the only negative really is you get water in your bc, but if you wash your bc properly then no problem). This helped me dial in buoyancy quicker, in my mind anyway.

I would suggest that you and your S/O attend the SCUBA Show in Long Beach California this next Saturday and Sunday.

Visit with the vendors, attend the seminars, don't forget the Saturday night party ...Up early Sunday and back to the show until closing ...This should give a you a good prospective on what diving is about.
