Hello all,

i would like to get your advice regarding my symptoms after diving. I started my advanced course in the weekend including "Underwater Navigator" and "Buoyancy controls". We did three dives in one day, all of them not deeper than 20 m, average 10 m. Dive were all around 50 min and in computer limits.
During one dive i was getting out of breath and felt some dizziness after the navigation exercise. The problem was that i lost feeling of depth and was ascending to 5 m and when i realized i was descending again to 12 m, so my dive profile wasn't perfect and also i felt kind of narcosis (slow thinking, unable to count, insecurity) and i was short breathing. But i didn't have equalizing problems. After the dives i was very exhaust and in the evening i started to get headache and sensibility of my ears to noise (people speaking was extremely loud). I didn't sleep well the day before dive and also day after dive. Next day the headache continued accompanied with dizziness, fatigue and sometimes nausea. The second day after the dive the headache was better but i had severe dizziness and i couldn't work because i was not able to concentrate. My head felt like i have cotton inside. I went to emergency, but they are not well informed here about diving symptoms. They checked my blood but everything is ok. They said it might be slight DCS and i could go in a decompression chamber, but i think i wanted to stay better at home because i don't have any other symptoms. Today is day 3 after dive, i have no headache and but i still have dizziness so that i couldn't work. Can you please help me to find out what could have caused this symptoms and how i can prevent this in future. Do i have to worry and when can i go diving next time?

Thank you very much for your advised in advance!
Greetings,

Nastia,
Jack Hammer gave you good advice. You should make an appointment with a qualified medical professional, possibly starting with a cardiologist and neurologist to discuss your symptoms. DAN might be able to direct you to a doctor that also has a background as a Maritime Medical Officer (dive doc). There are a lot of very serious medical issues that might not show up on a blood test, but could cause your symptoms. Don't waste your time, and possibly health, looking for a medical diagnosis on SB. SB is a great resource for diving, but medical anecdotes from divers that are not qualified medical professionals are not in your best interest.

Nastia, your symptoms are worrisome. Even though you said that you had no difficulty equalizing, I don't think that inner ear barotrauma can be ruled out. I would also be concerned for inner ear and/or neurological decompression sickness. You need to be seen immediately by a diving medical professional. I would recommend that you return to the hospital and if they don't have a physician who is trained in diving medicine, request that you be evacuated to a facility that does. DAN can provide good advice as other posters have recommended. You can also call our facility at (919) 684-8111 and request to speak to the hyperbaric physician on call. If English is not your first language, our hospital can provide a translator. It probably goes without saying, but do not dive again until you've been cleared by a diving medical professional.

Best regards,
DDM

I am currently in Saudi Arabia near Jeddah and there is no diving specialist available. I try to call the DAN number but somehow the number is not working. Do i need a special area code? I am getting better every day, today the symptoms are much better, but i can still feel something is wrong probably in my left ear and i am slightly dizzy. Still i would like to talk to a specialist. Can someone please post the international number for DAN?

Thanks for all the advises!

The DAN contact number for your region: +39-06-4211-8685.

Best, cmr

The first two numbers are US numbers and require the US international code before: try dialing a "1" before if you're trying to reach DAN US or our hospital.
