Piece of advice, ditch that plastic spool and go buy an Apex spool. Where you like diving, with currents you'll benefit from the fact it is easy to grip and has a very large finger hole.

Just last week I was on a dive that went to rat sh1t in a hurry. On my way out of dodge, I launched my dsmb at 10m, on my way to 5m for the stop. The current emptied my 50m spool. The line was near horizontal (and I was like Mary Poppins being dragged) Had I had a plastic spool with a little finger hole, I would have abandoned it (or it would have cut through my finger.

Also don't mince about with knots or silly sharpie marks on the line. if you need a lazy marker (I admit to having one on my line spool) just loop on a different colour cord for the last 15' or whatever. when teh cord changed colour, you're at you stop depth.

I'm also a big advocate of the AP valves crack bottle dsmb. Yes it's expensive, but I can (and have) launched mine in a washing machine current. Open teh valve and let it fly, no faffing with using a reg or oral inflate. You refill the cylinder off your main tank chose either A clamp or Din depending.

I'm only just replacing my tube after over 400 dives (and almost that many deployments) in 4 years as the inner membrane is giving way an it's starting to leak air. Given it's exposed to the Middle East environment I'd say that's good going.

So, for a while, I had my SMB wrapped up with 20 feet of line around it and a couple of pieces of inner tube, and then attached to the butt ring on my crotch strap with a bolt snap.

It came off a couple of times and made a mess of SMB and loopy line which then got caught around my fins, and which I had to clean up.

I now have it in a mesh bag which is attached to the bottom of my backplate. Works great, but I can't get the velcro on the bag open with gloves on. May have to experiment with something different.

. . .
The solution is to have your buddy standing by with another 50m length spool, ready to clip and deploy onto your running line just before your spool empties.

If you're by yourself-solo and regularly encounter the above problem, use the better convenience and utility features of the Halcyon 60m Defender Pro Spool instead to launch your DSMB, with back-up spool(s) standing by as needed. .

Thanks for the advice. I thought the one I just bought today includes the Apex Spool. I’ll check if the hole is big enough for my index finger to get into the hole when I get it this coming Friday.

The AP valves crack bottle DSMB seems like pretty slick idea, However, wouldn’t it become more bulky to wrap the bottle around with DSMB?

Since I already bought another DSMB & LP hose inflator, I’ll see how this setup works for me before trying another one. I now will have 4 LP & 2 HP hoses coming out my 1st stage reg LOL.

I would not get a new lp hose just for it.
Just pop off your drysuit hose and use that then plug it back in when you are done

If you do not have joy with the spool try a reel I find them alot easier to use. Yes they are a bit bigger but allow you to hold on and with 5mm gloves on you still have control over everything. With no gloves spool may be fine but I could not control it anywhere as easy as a reel.
Find what works for you.

I am not aware of any "crack bottle" DSMBs that use cylinders that have U.S. regulatory approvals. I have a 1 cf cylinder that I use for soaking regs that I suppose I could repurpose into a DSMB crack bottle, with effort.
