I'm preparing for my 6th trip to Roatan and thinking it might be nice to dive Morat Wall. We always stay in West End. Our group will be mostly AOW to DM but will have one OW diver.

- how long on a bus
- what to do for non divers?
- what is another "must dive site" in the area?
- is there a wreck? and if so, which one?
- would the trip from West End be worth it?

We have booked our first trip to Roatan. Would appreciate your thoughts on dive sites especially for the West End area also. Thanks
I'm new to diving so not the best reference. But my sister's favorite dive is Hole in the Wall and she also likes the El Aguila dive. I haven't done either - they are both for AOW.

This might be a good thread for you - not all west end but a compilation of favorite sites in Roatan

Ok Thanks. When is your trip? Ours is the last two weeks of January. Booked a condo on the beach. Two of us are divers.
We go in March. The water is too cold for me in January

Incidentally, Morat Wall is FAR east end. It's definitely an out-of-the way trip if you are staying in the West End.

We dove Morat Wall in July with Pangea Divers. They are an outstanding boutique dive op located in Camp Bay (the Far East end of the island). We did a full day excursion with them that included spotting the saltwater crocs on Morat, drifting the wall, lunch and snorkelling on Pigeon Cay and a second dive near Pigeon Cay. It was a fantastic day!

Morat Wall has beautiful soft corals in extremely high density and is very unspoiled. Same for the reef surrounding Pigeon Cay. Fish populations are generally low as the area is heavily fished by locals for sustenance and sale to local restaurants. Pelagics are few and far between. We encountered a nurse shark on our second dive and spotted a cruising reef shark from the boat several times.

Pigeon Cay is a jewel that must be visited. It is a tiny atoll to the south of Barbetta and within visual range of Guanaja. It has a gorgeous beach with a few palm trees, surrounded by azure waters. If you plan to dive Morat or Barbretta, you must make a stop here. Good luck!

thinking it might be nice to dive Morat Wall.

I'm liking EvilOtters solution. Camp Bay is waaaay down a dirt road. I do not know of Pangea Divers, they are visible on the interGoogles.

It is a nice area. It is florid and intact because of the prevailing ESE wind. There is no siltation upstream of it. It can be a challenging to impossible access depending upon wind and wave, can often be exacerbated by remarkable ground swell from zone typical shallow terrain.

mostly AOW to DM but will have one OW diver.

There's nothing here to challenge any particular level. The real question is for you to answer: of your group, is everyone ready to use a Panga (and all that entails) as a dive boat. Funky vertical wooden ladder, very cramped space, rolling boat, maybe a titch overloaded. A "live" boat entry roll upon command, maybe a negative instantaneous descent will be required and drifting pickup? How about correctly deploying a SMB, you might possibly finally need to use it to not spend a night drifting off of Barbaretta. On the plus side you might crawl ashore on Guanaja. There is no c-card that has that punch list per-se, but it's more about breadth of previous experience. This has the potential, not great, for the **** to get really real.

- how long on a bus

Commercial....Three hours, maybe? I'd hire a van or two. Remember, you're entering into the leagues of beginner expedition style diving.

- what to do for non divers?

Little to nothing, outside of West End, there's your overall answer for Roatan.

This applies matter where you jump-off from, Oak Ridge is the default unless you can figure out something in Port Royal. PR might cost you another 30 minutes by vehicle versus saving you 8 minutes of a boat ride over a Port Royal departure. Camp Bay? Iffy roads if it's rainy.

IF you can get North side's Turquoise Bay to commit to a Morat trip from their outside contract dive op, It would be way easier to drive to, offering non divers....something....and Subway is a well run contractor. (I do not recommend TBR as a dive resort per se, but it's the only way to see East end of North side, not on a "must do", but still it completes your set of understanding of the various distinct zones of Roatan diving)

- what is another "must dive site" in the area?

On another thread, you mentioned "Hole in the Wall", assumably on the North side. There are two such dive sites so named on Roatan, One is located near Morat Wall. You may well better understand the intrinsic value of advanced CCards after observing your more expert divers churn up the visibility as they go ahead of you. Consider asking about Calvin's Crack.

- is there a wreck? and if so, which one?

There are several, all are shrimpers, tattered and most protrude above water. So, no.

- would the trip from West End be worth it?

Not for me. Not from West End.

Consider your eigth trip using CoCo View or Reef House dive resorts. A small few South side resort properties might/may/could offer you Morat access, but they aren't actually dive resorts. After as many trips as you have to Roatan, it's time for you to see how the South side is so much different, not just for a whambam day visit.

The biggest difference? Consider the placed shipwrecks of Roatan. On the North side, you find two that lie in remnant shreds at 100fsw. On the South, there are two commonly dived that are as intact as they day they were as sunk 30 years ago, sitting in 22 to 65 feet of depth. Go find out why, see the difference in critters and growth.

Time to spread out for a look see.

Out of interest, why do you not recommend Turquoise Bay/Subway Watersports?

Didn't say that. I like Subway. That's what I believe I said.

Maybe I misunderstood. Is it just Turquosise Bay you don't recommend and not their dive op, Subway Watersports? My wife and I had a great visit to Turquoise Bay, I don't understand your comment.
