I belong to a dive club that does a lot of community service. Check our website Suncoast Reef Rovers - Been there, dove that!
This includes underwater cleanup of the Venice fishing pier, the north and south jetties and the Venice mooring field. These areas are off limits to diving except for these events.
The expenses to do these projects has exceeded the clubs annual intake.
We are a small club and rely on volunteers to help get these projects done.

The question is would you pay $5 to do a cleanup dive?

Thanks

Five bucks to access sites I can't get to otherwise, sure.

On the other hand, I'll donate time or money to a cause. Rarely both.

I have paid to do a cleanup dive before. It was only $10 but I still paid. Cleanup dives aren't like a regular fun day of diving look at marine life but they are needed.

My thought process was : Would I pay someone to take the time to clean up an area I love? Say a park or forest or something similar? Sure I would if I thought I would help to make a difference. So why not pay $10 to be able to be a part of the solution?

In all fairness I was also part of a cleanup dive that didn't cost me a dime.

Seems very nominal to me. I'd be good with it.

Yes, I would. I volunteer time and money no problem. But that's me.

Might be interesting if you can partner with a local shop and get the participants a discount on air fills or some other spiff

Window stickers? Make it a cool thing in the dive community to offset layer them up over the years? When you're in the parking lot at the dive site, or club meetings, folks could see that a person helped out with the last three or five or whatever.

Agreed on the nominal fee. This isn’t like organizations whose business model is for volunteers to shell out a lot of money. They just want some help with expenses. Sounds reasonable to me.

Another thought might be to set up a "cleanup fund" within the club's financial books. Then it could be tracked, etc. People aren't paying a fee to clean up, per se. The club is asking for a donation of $5 OR MORE to help fund the cleanup efforts when you dive. I suspect that you'll get some tens and twenties thrown in. Then that money is already set aside in the budget to help with next year's, or to help buy better supplies, whatever.

Diver's here in SoCal have been paying much more than that to dive Avalon Bay and clean up trash. Of course they also get a t-shirt as part of the package.
