As a marine biologist who has used SCUBA in my work for six decades, I am shocked that so few divers here on ScubaBoard frequent the Marine Life and Ecosystems forum. Are divers not interested in the critters they see underwater?

I can understand those who dive with a different "porpoise" (such as wreck and cave divers), but I would think the majority of recreational divers would be more interested in the marine life they encounter.

Ah, you just reminded me, Bill ... I meant to post something down there after my dives on Sunday.

It's unusual that I see something in Puget Sound that I've never seen before ... Sunday I found this little shrimp ... less than an inch long. No idea what type. Colorful little thing ... don't you think?

In my opinion it's because most people don't know what they are seeing other than "pretty fish" or "weird underwater life" and have no idea about the life/natural history of them. It's hard to discuss what you don't know.

You need to have more posts on seaweeds and seagrasses. Too much on those photosynthetically- and phenolically-challenged animals. (It's possible I have a little bias.....)

Since you asked ... this is from Deception Pass three weeks ago ... have you dived there? It's gorgeous ...

Oh, Dr. Bill! Don't take it personally. I don't think it's a matter of avoiding the forum. As you know, I'm moderately active on SB, but I haven't "gone" to a specific forum but once or twice in the last couple weeks.
Nah! I log on and scan the posts I haven't seen, out of "Recent Posts". If it's one of yours, I'll read it right out of there. It's the catchy title that usually pulls me in. If I haven't seen anything on repairing regs (for example) in awhile, I might actually visit that forum. But usually it's only to find out that nothing new has been posted that I haven't seen from "Recent Posts".

Don't stop posting!

Marine Life and Ecosystems

Always give a link, I get lost looking though the forums and haven't seen nearly all of them. It took a while to find it, even though I read dive dry, I didn't know what forum it was in. May be this will help folks find and use the forum.

Good luck

Bob

I do the recent posts thing too... and I second the idea of reticence to post “I saw a pretty fish”, especially since I don’t take pics, but you are right, more posts on this topic would be interesting!

I'm glad you posted this. I didn't even know that page existed! Since all of the activity is in the Basic and Advanced forum that's what I started reading and now it's really all I visit.

I'm a huge fish guy. They're my favorite animal (I keep fish as pets and love scuba diving with them). I actually joined this forum hoping people would talk a lot about the fish they see and other discussions regarding marine wildlife but I never see that on the Basic forum.

I'm going to check/post there more often.

Thanks for the post!

It's a subforum under a subcommunity that I would have never seen. Thanks, @Bob DBF for the link. I tend to stick to the Basic, New Divers, and Cozumel forums because those are the most relevant to me.
