Dear original poster,

Welcome to Scubaboard, where your answer will never get answered in a civilized manor. Hopefully, after hours of reading, and ignoring most of the posts, you might make an answer for yourself. Now this thread will probably go on for another week, and it isn't going to get any better nor any more informative.

No their responses are not valid. You don't need to worry if your dive computer fails as you can just follow your buddy's computer...back to the surface. Did I say to not thumb the dive, no. Did I say to use it tomorrow, no...

The problem is, that context was added by others, not by me...
Actually, the real problem is that you left out the caveats you now include in your original response:
Unless you are going on a once in a lifetime trip, not necessary IMO. Your buddy has your backup.
Pretty easy to see how that could be interpreted the way the participants here did, now isn't it?

Pretty easy to see that some people like to put words in other people's mouths. Yes, that much is obvious. The real problem is putting words in other people's mouths.

Actually, regardless of the arguing, a lot of good information was shared that should spur thought on the subject and help the Op make their own, informed decision! There is no black and white answer to many things so "discussion" is always useful.

Seriously? You don't see how your original post was very unclear on what you meant by "your buddy has your backup"?

LOL! You've got it backwards again! Your comment did not include things you should have said!

That's the problem - your original comment was too vague to get what you meant until you later added actual details. That's all.

Putting words in another persons mouth is what is backwards.

If it was too vague to be considered safe, then it was also too vague to be declared unsafe. It works both ways.
