I tip the gas pumpers a token amount. I tip the baggers to stand out of the way and let me do it myself; I can crush my own chips, thank you very much. I tip the musicians to leave and play far, far away from my table. I tip the waiters depending on the service I get. I tip the water guy, the barber, and the food delivery guys. I do not tip the guy who takes my bag out of my hand and throws it on the bus, or the ferry baggage loaders, or the ferry guy who hands me my bag after we arrive, or taxi drivers, but I do tip the shuttle drivers when they go out of their way to drop me off first.

I'm not complaining as going to mexico is dirt cheap for me and I'm a gracious tipper at home too. But it might be easier to create a list of people we shouldn't tip?

I've only walked around Mega, don't think I've ever bought anything there as I don't go to Coz to cook my meals, but grocery baggers is definitely new to me.

OTOH I was leaving Mega a few months ago, and when I got to the bottom of the slidewalk and headed for the door a guy stood in front of me and said "taxi?" I nodded, but I didn't need him to do anything; the taxi stand I was going to was right outside the door. I wheeled my cart up to the taxi, put my bags in the back and got in the cab. The guy had followed me out and was standing there, expectantly. Tip? I don't think so; it was more like he was trying to charge a toll for letting me out the door.

He thought the average tourist couldn't find the door. Do you like the guys in the restroom that get your paper towels for you?

A couple more outstretched hands I do not tip: The young guys who try to "guide" you into a parking space like you are pulling a 777 up to the jetway and the young guys who wants to help you take your groceries out of your cart to put in the car. I put the groceries in the cart without help and I can take them out the same way.

Yes, I've always felt like that process was a thinly veiled shakedown.
Don't like it at all.
Full disclosure: I have tipped them as much as 5 pesos to unload/load after our first trip when we're getting stocked up for our typical 12 day stay.

Out of curiosity, what is the suggested amount for tipping the guys who take care of landscaping and raking the beach at resort or rental properties? It seems these guys are tirelessly working in sweltering heat or rain with rudimentary tools. Some of them will offer me a sliced coconut. I also feel their presence adds a layer of security/watchful eye. I tip housekeeping, and feel these workers should also get tipped, but am clueless on the appropriate amount.

Exactly! This practice is especially prevalent on the east side in front of coconuts. I also do not want the proffered palm leaf woven grasshopper.

Not all of them.

You're saying some of the people pumping gas at Pemex stations do not get paid? Which ones, and how do I tell? Do they have to buy their own uniforms? Why do the employed pump jockeys permit volunteers? Given Mexico's employment laws, how does Pemex not end up in serious trouble if one of these volunteers gets hurt?

I don't know the answer to your questions. I believe I am correct but......So far as Pemex liability how about Mega's liability with the baggers?
