That's very true, but now there are septic systems underwater there. I have my public safety diver gear (dry suit and FFM), which I was planning on using, but I would want a hot shower right after for hair with a good ear flush.

ive got none of that... ill be waiting until things get back to normal. until then im just thankful its hunting season so boredom doesnt find me

I'm pretty sure you are always diving in "untreated" lake water. The water doesn't get treated till it goes from the lakes to the treatment plants.

Very true, but the water quality was good enough to be potable if treated. Not the case right now.

All water is potable if treated including raw sewage straight from your toilet. Many cities drink their treated waste water. The problem with the Austin water supply is that they can't treat fast enough to keep the drinking water reservoirs full. This is not a boil water order. It is a recommendation. There is a difference. The lake is also going to have chemicals in it from flooded garages and storage buildings. I don't believe the inundated septic systems is as big of an issue as the animal feces that was washed into the lake but even that is a normal issue in any lake. Yes, bacteria levels are way up. A healthy immune system and post dive precautions should make the decision to dive something that is not crazy per se.

I am always concerned about sinus infections when diving or swimming in any lake or river. I feel safer on scuba.

Here is an interview with the mayor that clears up some mis-conceptions. The problem is the silt clogging the filters, not the bacteria levels. They have to shut down the pumps to repeatedly clean the mud from the filters. Doesn't sound like the viz I want to be diving in.

Q&A: Mayor Adler on Austin's boil water notice

This is such a shame. Particularly since the viz was fantastic just before the floods.

We saw 4 foot long catfish all over the steps and platforms. Some actually looked like overgrown plecostomus from someone’s fish tank. Once I could see four at the same time. Richard said you can only see them when the visibility is that good. There were also a lot of conventional snapper shaped fish swimming parallel to the wall.

We could also swim between the 60 foot and 100 foot platforms though they were actually 22 feet or so shallower. The thermocline was at about the level of the 100 foot platform at 78 feet.

At 111 feet we could see some sort of boat and some junk with a light. The temp was 61 degrees at that depth.

We had just started using Travis for aow, deep, and tec courses because of the bad offshore weather. Now it looks like we are back to that.

The water coming out of the damn below Lake Austin looks like watery dirty chocolate milk.

Nasty. They're saying the boil water notice is to last until at least Sunday. I suspect with this week's rain flowing down to Travis in the next few days, it'll be at least a week before diving in Travis is viable. It looks like the class I have next weekend will be in Spring Lake - darn

Take a shovel if you want to go deep.

That has to suck, right? I've been diving locally the past couple weekends helping with OW classes and I will be tomorrow and Sunday as well. We have two classes that will be combined. One class from SMU of 20 and then one from the shop that's either 6 or 8. So it's going to be a big class. My instructor would like all of us DMT's out there to help but I'm sure a couple won't make it. There are 7 in class but due to crappy weather Wednesday night only 3 of us made it to class and one of us isn't going to the lake. So I guess we'll see how many we end up with tomorrow. I thought the instructor was going to send out an email asking everyone to show up but so far I haven't seen it. Guess we'll find out. I was hoping to get out to WP soon but looks like that won't be happening for a while. Moreover, I wanted to dive Spring Lake, too. Guess we'll get there soon enough.
