@NelleG you are a true inspiration!!
Now I too am getting fired up to dive the Keys, probably Key largo will be the target location!
I too will be flying out of Boston in April(Probably, if I can make it work)

I'm buying drinks at Sunset Pier if our paths cross!!

@DanSinks
I just booked our flights. We’re on JetBlue 4/26 returning home 5/4. I think we’re going to base ourselves out of Key Largo because Rainbow Reef has some decent lodging packages. We’ll probably do most of our diving in the KL area too, but there are others on my list as well. The above posters gave us some great tips. Maybe we’ll see you on a dive?

I just booked my flight but unfortunately I'll be there the week after you, the other dates didn't quite work.

I like the deals that the Rainbow Reef offers and probably will book a package thru them. There are other operators in the area, so might want to keep options open.

So @NelleG maybe you can provide some useful info/tips when you get back, I'd love to hear about your dive experiences there!

Here's another tip. As you drive down the highway to the southernmost keys you're going to pass lots of places to eat. I wish I could recall the names of some of the better ones but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Best I can offer is to tell you to stay away from the Whale Harbor Inn which is just after the bridge going into Islamorada from Taverneir. It used to be a fantastic place, all you can eat seafood. I was looking forward to returning there a year or so back when we went back to the Keys after a long break. I did my due diligence, read the reviews and was stunned to see how bad it got after a change in ownership. Needless to say we skipped it.

Edited to add: I just looked it up again and I see it's got some recent rather suspicious positive reviews. If you look at them, you'll see lots of terrible ones that are consistent over the past years and refer to "before and after" it was sold. Those GREAT reviews are sporadically posited in between. My guess is that they're fake.

Found the place I couldn't remember earlier. We ate a few times at Marker 88, on the right side as you head south, in Islamorada. Lots of outdoor seating, good food, live entertainment, view of the water, private beach. Now I'm starving.

If you're staying in Largo, check out Alfredo's Cookhouse. I love that place. They have a little bit of everything and all of it is good. You can even get Hibachi without having to sit at a Hibachi table :D

We usually go there after a long day of diving and pig out.

You cant go wrong with Mrs Macs Kitchen..
They have 2 locations but I prefer this one since its bigger..
5 minute drive south of Rainbow Reef..

Another tip on Rainbow Reef...
I don't know your cert level but if you're intersted in AOW it's only around $160 add-on when you buy a minimum 3-trip package ($210)..
Includes elearning fee..
Enjoy!!!

Are you sure that's correct? You're saying a diver could pay for 3 dive trips, and Rainbow Reef will throw in the entire AOW course including books or online course, certification card processing fees, AND 2 more dives for only $160 over the cost of the 3 dive trip package? It's not clear on their website but that sounds rather.. inexpensive.

@caruso
Yes that is correct..
Its the online elearning so no physical books..
3 dive trips of 2 tanks each... Total 6 dives..
Except if you choose 1 night dive. Night dive trips are 1 tank dives. (So u end up with 5 dives total)

Me and my 2 teenage sons did it thru them a couple of years ago..
Just call to verify that its still the same $
