Question What's the expected lifespan of a HP/LP hose?

I have had good luck with the piranah hoses.

It's funny you say pirahna, never had any issues from the hoses bought there.

Miflex's web site says the replacement interval for Xtreme braided hoses is every 5 years (of course, this doesn't cover all manufacturers, or even Miflex's other hoses):

Not exactly universally applicable, but they are three data points.

Holy crap.. I'd be spending $1000 every 5 years for all the sets at my house!

Please let me know when you need to toss your old hoses.. I'd be happy to take them off your hands

Haha. I did just toss a handful of recreational reg length hoses. Had a ton of hoses. They got split between two buddies and the rest (5-6) went in the trash. No one else local wanted them.

My son actually uses the 5' miflex @Marie13 sent me a year or 2 ago...still works great!

Don't throw away good gear.. someone on here is always willing to cover shipping to see them put to good use!

The older the hose, the longer it last. :-D

Just kidding, sort of. Your observation that some of the older hoses-both lp and hp seem to take a licking and keep on ticking is the same as mine. However, close inspection should be done externally. Plus a bubble check (easy to do on a dive.) But how does one inspect the inside of a hose?

The method I use it to run a "pig" through the hose. Go to Hobby Lobby or your favorite hobby center and purchase long white pipe cleaners. Twist them into a long shape that will just fit inside the hose-then (you guessed it) shoot that puppy through the hose and inspect the pipe cleaner. Does it have an amount of carbon black on it you might find unacceptable?

Try it, you'll like it.

I have no problem throwing away stuff. I’ve actually pitched stuff before (not dive gear) because there was no freaking way I was going to give it to the person who wanted it.

I've seen hoses that were more than 17-years old and still in use. I did have a problem with 2 HP hoses which only had a 100 to 150 dives between them, before switching back to rubber hoses. I've changed hose configuration and kept the old hoses for spares or if I decide to go on a liveaboard.

Just food for thought and only my opinion. I co authored the braided hose failure and counterfeit braided hose issue in Alert Diver 18 months ago. I still use braided hoses because they are more flexible and minimize my jaw fatigue. I live in North Florida cave country and can dive daily.

My recreational salt water rig gets new hoses every 3 years as they only get 50-60 dives per year.

My fresh water cave diving sidemount, deco and stage bottle all get changed out annually.
This keeps everything in my personal comfort zone.

Then there are those of us who use old hoses until they show the first signs of giving out. A high pressure hose failure doesn't scare me much because I don't dive deep and the restrictor will give me enough time to get onto my pony and surface.

I am the opposite. I HATE seeing stuff go to the landfill. I donate all kinds of things and probably spend more in gas than it is worth, donating to the good will.

As for hoses, I change them out if they bubble or the outer jacket becomes too cracked or split. I've not yet had a failure underwater.
