Good article, Fred. With plenty of room to grow... deck, ladder, bulkhead, overhead, hatch, etc., etc., ad nauseum :)

While it is true that many of these nautical terms are quite unnecessary, port and starboard are very useful. If you are talking to someone who is facing aft and you say something is to the left, he will not be sure if you mean HIS left or the BOAT'S left. If you say something is to port, it always means the BOAT'S left. Nevertheless, it is my understanding that the Navy has given up port and starboard because it was too hard to teach those terms to landlubbers, many of whom were already confused by left and right.

I always thought POSH was in reference to the port channel buoys - like red on right returning
