With the caveat that any place in real trouble is not going to be posting "all clear" pictures, for a 7.7 earthquake the damage seems incredibly, fortunately light. Around here the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 was magnitude 6.9 and killed 63 people as well as took the major bridge out of commission for a month. Hope everyone is safe.

No after shocks?

We had a good shake, rattle and roll at our place on 7 Mile Beach, but fortunately minimal damage. There were several aftershocks about 30 miles off the east side, the biggest being a 6.1. There are a few holes in the ground here and there but nothing major. Went to our liquor store across the street for a bottle of wine (to celebrate our survival) and they had just a couple of bottles fall off the shelf. In general, the island dodged a bullet.

The tectonic plates shifted side to side instead of butting up against each other, minimizing the tsunami effect. Amazingly there was no observable effect on the ocean here. on SMB The pool did slosh around quite a bit and lost a lot of water.

The timeline was

12:10 pm : 7.7 80 miles from GC

Aftershocks:

12:33 pm: 4.5 42 miles from GC

12:41 pm: 3.9 36 miles from GC

3:29 pm: 4.1 60 miles from GC

4:00 pm: 4.9 18 miles from GC

4:55 pm: 6.1 35 miles from GC (this was the only one we felt)

And 7 more aftershocks since then, all 4.4 (the last at 9:13 pm)

Two more aftershocks overnight:
11:37 pm - 4.1
12:16 am - 4.3

Nothing else in the past 7 hours, so looks like things are calming down. We have not felt any of the aftershocks except the 6.1.

Our pool was rocking and rolling as were the fish tanks and the boat in the canal. Don’t know if anyone has had a chance to check Kittiwake yet.
