    Diving the Florida Keys?

We are heading down to Florida for a week and will be going down to the Keys. We are looking at diving around Key West but have no idea what charter to go with and what sites to see. OW and AOW divers. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Another Surfer killed in Australia.

I agree. I hate seeing animals get killed but if they've been into contact with humans and have attacked, they should be killed to protect others. We do the same with bears...

    Disabilities and Political Correctness

I understand your point, however, not everyone needs to agree with you or use the terminology you use. Many words have many meenings for many different people. Like saying if a person is normal...well, normality is defined by those within the "normal" subgroup and is therfore a bias term...

    Do you double or single..

Just wondering if you DIR divers always or never dive double tanks. Do you always dive doubles, no matter what dive you do (180ft technical wreck or 30ft reef)...Do you only dive singles (you`are DIR but don't need the extra tank) or does it depend on the dive...

PADI REscue Diver Course - Changed

I've been out of it for a little while and my search has turned up nothing. Has PADI changed it's rescue course...if so, what are the changes... (please tell me they've made it a little tougher and rewarding to earn the cert!!). Thanks

    Stroke

Kay, This isn't a question that can be safely answered on the internet. Your friend needs to consult her GP and her neurologist (ideally one with dive/hyperbaric medicine knowledge). When it comes to strokes, or any central nervous illness, it really is a question of a case by case assessment...

    non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema

SIPE is a fairly uncommom presentation in the ED. Contributing factors seem to be immersion in cold water combined with strenuous exercise. There really is very little research on this topic, with only a few case reports. Keep in mind that there is no association with barotrauma or DCI. Most...

    Unconsciousness/Blocked Airway/Embolism

OK...at this point, I think I'm just wasting my time. Embolisms happen every day, all over the world! They can happen while driving, while sleeping, while eating, while having sex, and of course, while diving (or anytime, anyplace, for that matter). Maybe you're having trouble expressing...

    Unconsciousness/Blocked Airway/Embolism

No...why would an MI imply a convulsion??? You can get an MI and not convulse! MIs comprise of a ventilation/perfusion mismatch due to a coronary event reducing the efficient blood supply for the body's demand. Our body however, can compensate to reduce the insult on our brains. Furthermore, you...

    Unconsciousness/Blocked Airway/Embolism

I'd respond but I'm not exactly sure what you are saying... If I understand correctly, because you know someone who survived an uncon ascent and did not embolize, therefore it is impossible to embolize in this situation. Is this accurate? I'm sorry to say but medicine does not work that way. No...

    Unconsciousness/Blocked Airway/Embolism

Well...I've taken a few courses in diving medicine during conferences. Do I consider myself and expert in diving medicine/diving physiology, well, no. However, I do have a VERY solid background in human anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology (hence the MD). I'm currently in the process of...

    Unconsciousness/Blocked Airway/Embolism

A diver's airway can be obstructued if he becomes unconscious. The obstruction can be caused either by the epiglottis or surrounding tissues (this can also occur if very cold water is swallowed by the uncon. diver). That being said....in a rescue situtation, you don't have the luxury to make an...

    Brockville

Thank you for all your efforts Rick. I read some of the later posts that you sent via word, and I must say that some of the stuff that was said was awfull and some was simply wrong (reguarding the medical aspects of embolism, convulsions etc.). Let's be clear about one thing: being unconscious...

Accident discussions worthless? (split from accident thread)

They obviously allow SOME people to rant on and on and on about their discontent... No one is forced to contribute to the thread or even read it. The less you contribute to it, the easier it will go down the board and be forgotten. On the other hand, it does make some people feel better to give...

    Anyone w/ Scoliosis?

A mentor of mine is an Orthepedic Surgeon specialising in scoliosis surgery. From what he's told me, weight lifting and flexibility are the main concerns. That being said, if your doctor approves, you should be alright for diving. Remember, the aquatic environment is ideal for MSK problem rehab...

    Different pathology of MIs underwater?

Hi there, Just wondering if any (human or animal) research has surfaced reguarding the "physiology of an underwater MI"? We tend to see many reports of dive fatalities relating to MIs and I've always assumed that the pathology of an MI underwater is the same as that of one occuring at the...

Scuba diving dream for MD patient on a ventilator

Hello Matt, I can't give you much technical info, but here are some ideas that may help. 1. You'll need money to get this done and exposure...go to the media (regional, state, NATIONAL---TV, Radio, Papers....OPRAH! 2. Until this happens (and IT WILL HAPPEN) have you thought of seeing...
