    PADI instructor

I am a Padi Instructor, previously with a LDC until I retired and moved out of town. I sometimes return to my old dive center to do a class/confined but also teach on a private basis. I have set up a classroom in my home, have a couple sets of training gear and do private or semi-private...

I'm interested in diving - any tips?

I suggest you experience a "pool" dive before signing up. Most LDCs offer this dive as there seems to be no grey area. You love it and get hooked or determine that diving is not the recreational activity for you. Relax and enjoy the training and keep your homework up to date. The actual...

How long does a C Card usually take?

Padi usually takes about 2-3 week for a PIC envolope. Onlines about half the time. If the training portion of your logbook is complete and Instructor signed that should work as proof of certification along with a photo ID

Hpw often do people have to use octo.

The safety stop is a great time to test your octo and how it performs. You will probably notice how much better your primary breathes in comparision. When your buddy asks you on the boat why you switched to your octo at the safety stop, you can suggest you were getting low on air. If your...

    new to diving

For many beginners the mask removal/replacement is the challange. For others it's having the reg out of your mouth. Execution of these skills may result in a small bit of water up the nose or down the throat. For this reason, the first skill I teach in a confined water class is how to cough u/w.

    Pool session gone awry...

This incident reinforces the value of confined water sessions prior to diving in open water. The most important thing is to LEARN from the problem. Taking in a bit of water can be a stressor. I always get my students to practice "coughing" through the reg very early in the pool session to...

Getting the wife to dive - Toronto ON

I am a Padi Instructor recently retired from my day job and instructing out of my home near Picton. It sounds like your wife would be better with private or semi-private instruction. Many dive centres require a minimum number of students to justify instructor, divemaster and pool fees...

Needs to build confidence w/dives in calm, warm water

Habitat Curacao. Easy shore diving, great dive operation, warm water in January and nearly endless vis. The dive operation (Easy DIvers) is great and can provide a DM in the water for your warm up dives.

    Havin a hard time

It is not uncommon during the alt/air use skill to get the reg upside down. A little water intake is often enough to start the anxious/panic cycle that leads to "bolting". I have had great success with having students practice "coughing through the reg" early in the confined water course...

Should I go into AOW right after completing OW???

There are two schools of thought on this subject. The most important thing is to get diving immediately after your O/W cert and practice your new skills. I feel that if you can get in about half a dozen dives between, you will gain more from your A-O/W training. If you don't easily have an...

    NAUI v PADI

I have never heard of the "Padi Crawl" Before posting this reply, I referred to my Padi Instructor Manual in the conducting O/W dives 1-4 and the exit note stated "Choose an exit appropiate for the environment". ???

Exercises to prepare for cert test...

Find out where your LDC does their confined waters and see If you can get some practice time. On the tread, you only have keep your head (or just face) out of the water. If you keep a larger volume of air in your lungs it will be easier.

    lol, im a little scared

I'm with Mike. There is an old motorcycle saying "If you don't feel like riding -- DON'T" Recreational diving is something you do to enjoy and relax. Maybe back off a while, try snorkelling maybe, you can come back to scuba when you are ready.

    Nitrox question

    Tables can be good, but it your mix is 32.3 then: 1. 33 x 1.4 = 46.2 2. 46.2 / .323 = 143.03 3. 143.03 - 33 = 110.03

    Nitrox question

    Get out your calculator: First 33 x 1.4 = 46.2 46.2 / .32 (32%) = 144.3 144.3 - 33 = 111.3 ft max at PPO2 of 1.4

Pros and Cons of Nitrox: What are they?

On a recent dive with my wife using 32% and myself on air we compared ND time remaining when we reached 1000psi. We were both using Suunto Vipers and held a tight buddy position during the dive. My time 11 minutes, my wife had 37 left.

Opinion: Diving without a DM (or instructor, etc.)

My O/W training dives were in cold (55) water with 4-6 feet of vis. My first dives without an Inst/Dm were in tropical water with 100ft vis and 80 degrees. It was easy.

    Diving after flying

Now that you don't get fed on aircraft except for 9 little pretzels, you might want to get luggage, check in etc and have a lunch or snack before diving. I usually suggest a couple of hours after landing if you are feeling well and you have no difficulity clearing your ears on the surface.
