This is great! Thanks for posting. I would love to come across one of these sometime at Redondo, although it's a bit strange to know they could be right by you and you'd miss them!
I struggle with this myself as a long time swimmer. I do find that having a good flutter kick helps me be more streamlined. I try to just keep it slow and steady. It certainly helps on the surface to be a good swimmer.
I was fairly surprised that the swim test was so easy- you basically just have to get across the pool a few times without touching the walls. That's a pretty low bar considering people are expecting to swim in the ocean.
If it's water it might be more similar to swimmers ear. You can drip rubbing alcohol in there, which will join with the water to make enough liquid to pour out of your ear. Then the alcohol will dry the rest up.
If it's inner ear congestion, maybe try a neti-pot before and after.
I dove in Puget Sound this weekend in a layered shortie and farmer john set up totaling about 14mm. I'd layer a few and go with that- I was quite comfortable.
