    Bali - Recommended Operators

I've used Crystal Divers who are based in Sanur and they were very good. As Tippy mentioned if you can base yourself when diving at either Amed, Tulamben or Lembongan you will have a much better experience. Travelling to the dive sites from Sanur is a bit of a cow. Half the day.

Suggestions for Bali dive trip with non-diving wife

Got a similar issue non diving wife. One place that hasn't been mentioned is Candidasa. For your wife she has lots of choices in good accommodation, great restaurants and good massages. For you Padang Bai is close by 20 minutes, the islands off Candidasa are great and it is an hour drive to...

Running low on air quickly - need help and guidance

As a new diver I found my biggest improvement in the amount of air I used was when I stopped thinking about buoyancy and breathing and let it just happen how it happened. This occurred on a trip I made to a placed called Tulamben in Bali. I went for a dive with this photographer who basically...

    Why Scuba Diving?

I am a water person so naturally gravitate to any water. Being under it and cruising around looking at stuff is just me. I love just hanging above a bunch of rocks and watching all the little critters just going about their life. I can do this for a full tank. Many dives have seen me staying in...

Importance of compass on the console?

I am not a fan of consoles. I use air integrated computer, compass on a retractor and a backup SPG as my integrated air failed once. All I can suggest is don't cheap out on your compass. I get lost/direction disorientated constantly so rely on my compass to get back. Nothing worse than having...

Hoseless computer alone or with backup

I have an analogue backup. Initially I was very happy getting rid of a hose and gauge. Then one day my transmitter leaked. Yep no dive for me that day. So the next day I reconnected my analogue spg. No problems or worries since.

    New to Bali

Matahari Dive Resort Tulamben do fills for 100,000RP. That is your total cost for the dive :). I am sure there are also many places that do tanks fills only and you don't have to go out on a boat.

    how to ascend/ descend

I'm a duck dive, kick to the bottom and grab a couple of rocks sort of person. Mainly as I wear a lavacore plus 2 wetsuites which trap a lot of air :). Takes a minute or two until all the air is squeezed out and I can let go of my rocks. Yes a properly fitting thicker wetsuit would be best but...

Which light for recreational night diving?

I've gone though this. Borrowed a couple of lights which were good and ended up with something like this. 1600LM Cree XML T6 LED Underwater Scuba Dive Diving Flashlight Light Torch Lamp | eBay Played around with a couple of different brand batteries as the cheap batteries only last 20 minutes...

    Eek!! No way Jose . . .

I didn't think it was possible but this is total proof that you Yanks are crazier than us Aussies. Ok so they were tiny crocs but still. Yep crazier than us :).

What kind of gear do I really need?

OMG 45 degrees. I'd want a heated dry suit or a heated submarine for that :). As a newish diver who likes his own stuff I would suggest buy everything but buy entry level or 2nd hand. Best part about diving is you meet lots of new people who have lots of different ideas so use their ideas. BTW...

    Anyone else like shore dives?

I like shore dives. Boat dives are great too. A Porter makes both of these situations even better. I mainly dive at my local site. A shore dive with easy entry and mostly easy exit unless the swells get a bit big which can then become interesting as you are holding onto a rock for dear life and...

    Recommendations for Bali dive sites

Your travel is going to be huge. Seminyak to Lovina is about 3.5 hours driving. It is a nice drive though. Then Lovina to Gillis is a 4hr drive to the airport, 1/2 hour flight, 2 hour drive to Bengsal (sp) harbor, 20 minute boat trip. Or 4 hour drive to Padang Bai, 2.5 hour boat trip which can...

Looking for a Dive School in Southern Bali

Shame she is staying in Kuta. Sanur is closest. Have a look at Crystal Divers and Joe's Gone Diving. Travel to any "good" dive sites will be a bit of a journey :).

    Tulamben ... how?

mikeynl I don't know if this sort of thing would interest you but Matahari Dive Resort offers an all inclusive package which I found very convenient. Unlimited diving etc is included. Location is very important to me as I am not a fan of walking. Paradise Hotel and Matahari Dive Resort are...

    Questions about Discover Scuba classes

I've done discover dives where you get kitted up and jump in waist deep water, get 5 minutes instruction and away you go. I have seen a person freak out though and not do it so her boyfriend stepped in and went :). At my LDS it takes 2 hours in a class, 2 hours in a pool before you go in and...

    What got you into diving?

My uncle. When I was 14 I did work experience with him and that weekend instead of going home I went diving. Well he went diving and I went snorkeling. Now this is scary has anyone heard of Ron and Velerie Taylor. Growing up he lived at Bondi and snorkelled with Ron. Later on totally by...
