    TSandM -- Lynne Flaherty

I'm so sorry to hear this. I've learnt a great deal from TSandM's posts and she has always given great and sound advice. She was always the voice of reason on this board. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and SB. She'll be dearly missed.

    DGX Max Video Light

The beam is wider than my camera's field of view, no problems taking videos with it. Personally, I find that this video torch cannot "punch through" the water very well, so I use another torch with a tighter beam (10º I think) for looking around and stuffs. I'm using loc-line arms on my...

    DGX Max Video Light

I'm currently using one DGX Max video light with an Olympus TG4. I like it because it's compact, light and uses the same batteries (18650s) with my other dive torches. Best of all, it's a very affordable video torch. But with one LED, don't expect it to 'throw' light far for wide-angle shots...

DIR and the canister light: newbie questions

I understand the rule of thirds for gas planning.. but why is it applicable for the light's burn time as well?

Want BCD that gives me same buoyancy at any pitch angle

One thing I've learnt reading these kind of threads on SB is - if you find one guy arguing against everyone else, chances are the one guy is wrong.

    Cutting the Cord?

This is a good point that I overlooked. I get the exactly the same feeling when deploying my handheld backup lights. My wife did actually drop her handheld torch once on a wreck, but luckily I was just below her and caught it. :D

Handheld Primaries & DR RX8/LX20 Reviews

I can't find any info online on the RX6, was it a demo unit? Yes I wondered whether the battery of the RX8 would be too bulky. The LX20 does seem to have a smaller battery compartment and looks more streamlined. Cordless primary is starting to sound more and more attractive to me!

Handheld Primaries & DR RX8/LX20 Reviews

After USPS lost my almost new LM 21W LED in the mail when it was on the way back for warranty repair (sigh..), I think I'm in the market for a new primary light! I've been reading about Dive Rite's "Handheld Primaries" with some interest. In theory, it appears to suit my type of diving now and...

Vyper Air Says I am in Deco after I finish my 3 min Safety Stop

The dive computer can show a ceiling (similar to the display for deco) if your ascent rate is too fast. What was your ascent rate? When you downloaded the dive to DM4, did it show a warning (yellow triangle IIRC) after the safety stop?

    chinese can lights

I own the Brinyte DIV06 can light, which I think looks very similar (or may be the same) as DRIS's Can Light. Initial impressions were great, the light was bright, price was good and the quality felt good. I brought it along for my Cavern course, it did pretty well for the first 4 dives. By...

Kudos to Princeton Tec's Customer Service

I would like to compliment Princeton Tec on their excellent customer support based on my recent encounter with them. The switch on my Miniwave LED broke, and I wrote in to Princeton Tec asking where I could purchase a replacement. I received a prompt reply with an offer to send a replacement...

    I need advice on...breathing.

Tips that helped me improve my SAC when I started out: 1) Take long, deep and slow breaths. Are you taking shallow breaths? 2) Frog kick helps - kick and glide. If done properly, it can save energy and reduce gas consumption. 3) Minimise movement underwater. Try to move only your legs for...

How to piss off a Divemaster?

Ironically, this thread has turned into a thread that pisses off DMs (and DMs to be)!

    CNS O2 exposure

When I did a SDI Computer Nitrox course, 1.6 was taught to be the default max ppO2 (and 1.4 for challenging dives). But then again, I've been told that SDI is supposedly known for pushing the boundaries. I don't think it's substantially flawed, but you could also see the hypothetical test of 1.6...

    CNS O2 exposure

I was taught that it was not essential to track CNS O2 for recreation diving, as it is most likely that the NDL will be reached first. This thread got me thinking as to whether this statement is indeed true. After some number crunching to answer whether NDL will alway be reached before CNS O2...

    Challenging Poor Buddy Skills -

Hi, what do you mean? Are you able to share more about what the instructor(s) did that put the dive party at risk? I think it may make a good case study.

Rule of Thirds & Shallow Rec diving

I have questioned the reason behind the "magic" 50 bars reserve gas advocated by many dive agencies, why not say, 40 bars or 60 bars? I made some calculations before to "interpret" this requirement, appended below. I learnt in my OW that the 5m/3min safety stop is not mandatory, so, 50 bars...
