Off-topic Discussion moved from Diver Missing in the Bahamas thread

Not to mention torturing other fish, making them die slow deaths; to attract a few more wanna-be, he manly-mens. I bet this post gets deleted because it does not comport to the prevailing Groupthink.

Off-topic Discussion moved from Diver Missing in the Bahamas thread

This is the second time you're used the word "jihad" in this thread. Are you going for cheap emotionalism? Do you even know what it means, or how incredibly snarky it is? Please stop equating people holding valid opinions with violent, religiously motivated murderers and war mongers. It's...

why hasnt nitrox replaced compressed air completely?

Our instructor told us that 24 hours was the original recommendation and later research dropped it to 18. Yet in my (perhaps over) conservative mind I stuck with the 24 hour rule. It was just easier for me to remember. Sorry for the confusion.

why hasnt nitrox replaced compressed air completely?

Are you saying that the 24 rule of thumb isn't good enough? If I have a flight on Thursday at 2pm (1400hrs), isn't it enough to simply stop diving by noon or 1pm on Wednesday? I hope so because that is my current plan!

Paying for the privilege of working

Feelings aside, this is the reality of the labor market today, especially for young people looking to amass skills. Think of it as tuition to learn some specialized skills, and the toilet cleaning as building character.

So, this stuff isn't supposed to happen, but I guess it does

I didn't get if you were able to inform either the DM or instructor that you were at 70 bar. If you had done so, they may have just ascended right then and there, no matter how far from the boat you were. FWIW, I actually kind go enjoy a lesiurely surface swim of 100-200 meters, but am sensing...

    refusing an instabuddy

Funny post. I think you make a good point about the buddy system maybe undermining personal responsibility. Thus far ALL my dives have been with insta-buddies and I've gotten pretty good at spotting red flags and eliminating some of my own beginner issues. (Hint: if it's his 12th dive ever...

    Major career change !

Thanks all, I'm in a similar boat, 51 and unenthusiastic about my current career.* The plan right now is to quit my job in Jan., move to a place where I can get DM certified, then spend at least a year diving, living very frugally, working where I can and getting a lot of experience logged...

Buoyancy in 7 mil and how to be a good instabuddy -- kelp!

Y'all are awesome! Thanks for the tips. Concerning weight, I'm a big guy with maybe a little too much belly. Diving with no wetsuit in ridiculously warm water and a 200 bar alum. tank, ~12 lbs. was just right. (6 x 800 grams weight). I think that the 28 lbs. is to provide me a margin of...

Buoyancy in 7 mil and how to be a good instabuddy -- kelp!

Heading for the San Clemente Islands aboard a 4 day live aboard. I'm going solo and joining a group. As a newbie, yeah, I'm a little nervous. To wit: 1. I've never dove in any sort of wetsuit, only a rash guard. I'll be renting a 7mil suit this trip and am wondering how it will affect my...

What sets off your alarm bells?

I take it mean always go with the ones who are relaxed and have the most experience. I'm not military, Hell I was a Peace Corp volunteer.

    Observing versus touching

Another way to think about it is as a nice scape from a totalitarian prison. Adam and Eve didn't dive, but now we can, bless our lucky stars.

Rights and Responsibilities Between Buddy Divers

Do some people bypass the buddy conundrum by solo diving right from the beech? If your girlfriend did that would you call her a birch? Perhaps it's something that you oak not to do, but it's either that or not dive, which is like getting left in a larch. might be time to go to sleep...

Rights and Responsibilities Between Buddy Divers

Anybody here have a climbing background? I'm thinking of alpine climbs, or multi pitch or multi day mountain adventures. the kind where you rope up with someone and trust them with your life for the duration of the climb. It seems that there are some commonalities, but also a lot of...

    Observing versus touching

Thank you for the thoughtful informative reply. At the risk of getting too woo -woo and New Agey, I'd suggest that maybe taking personal responsibility for minimizing touching and stressing in marine environments can lead to more macro actions. Yes, I was recently in Thailand and somewhat...

    Observing versus touching

This is only anecdotal, but some long time divers I've spoken with say that the amount of sea and coral life they used to see has greatly diminished over the past decades. I'm sure that there are any number of reasons for this, but I also think it is safe to assume that the huge increase in...

Experimenting with a beanie to help regulate body temp

I'm not sure a rash guard provides any warmth. In 31 deg. C water (~87 deg. F), we could still feel various thermoclines. Maybe just a vest, hoodie, gloves and booties?

Just to be safe, better buy the sooper sekrit decoder ring. It's good to 300 meters.

Brand New Diver - Where To Get Some Experience

Ko Tao. You can catch a flight direct from Chiang Mai to Ko Samui and take a short ferry to Ko Tao. (Not sure how far Korat is form CM though...). where did you do the OW course? I stayed and learned at Big Blue, but there are a ton of options.
