    Baggage Fees

Asian limit is now 20kg total for international flights. For a tech trip (drysuit, stage regs, etc.) this is only about half the necessary weight allowance. An extra 20kg costs anywhere from $200-500, one way. :(

Seeking advice for 3 week first Philippine dive trip

I'm returning from 7 days at Tech Asia in Puerto Galera right now (actually, Sabang/Small La Laguna which is where Atlantis and all the other shops are). Be sure to give them a look if you're thinking of going to PG.

    Puerto Galera or Anilao

Haven't been to Anilao, but am returning from my second stay in PG. Love it there. Good night scene too.

    Regulator Vomiting

My wife has had the vomiting problem on most every dive but she claims it's a reaction to having the wetsuit around her neck. She rarely dives so, sadly, there's no chance she'll overcome the issue in the foreseeable future. A friend who also exhibited the "breakfast in the sea" symptoms had...

Canon EF 100mm F 2.8 USM L series vs. the non-L series version

I only have the L but tried the non-L at a store before purchase. No comparison. Topside, the grip, feel, and IS for handheld make it an even easier decision.

    TSA = Idiots

Coming back from our ITC in Korea, Japanese TSA agents pulled me aside after the initial x-raying was completed and were interested in two items: my old primary light battery (aka, the "dynamite stick") and the Gillette shaving cream canister that classmate Ali (from Dubai) had left with me. It...

    Cost of tech?

To the OP, in simple terms: lots. In GUE training alone, not including gear, just training and getting to that training (though not including the cost of time off from work either), I've spent over $25,000. I had to check it thrice to verify, but it's true. That includes DIR-F, Tech 1, Tech...

What's the general guideline for water temp and exposure suit thickness?

75F+ = 3/2mm wetsuit For everything else, a drysuit. (I'm serious). :) ------ You could add a 5mm between 65F and 75F, but with its poor buoyancy characteristics at depth, why bother?

    Okinawa Underwater Explorers

The OUE doesn't have rental gear, but can source certain items for you if you like. Depending on what you're looking to use, of course. Doug Bennett's shop, Reef Encounters, offers DSS rental gear with hog setups, I think, but if you want Halcyon, you either bring or arrange to meet some of...

    CUDA vs HDV T16

I think maybe I should update my avatar, no? lol

    CUDA vs HDV T16

As I noted, the Halcyon has this too and, arguably, in a less tiring fashion since you "set it and forget it". With the Cuda, say, your buddies are in 4th gear...each time you come off the trigger, you have to readjust to get back into speed. So far, I've noticed little things like this nag...

    CUDA vs HDV T16

Hello, Just saw this. I recently purchased an HDV-T16 and I've previously ridden both Cuda 550s and 650s as well as owned a Sierra a few years ago. I've had the T16 in the water less than 10 times (from both boat and shore), but my initial observations is that is it is a REALLY solid...

    United States "drowned towns"

Has anyone heard of anything buried in Wyoming, say, in Jackson lake or the surrounding lakes?

To the OW divers I "met" at Jackson Blue last weekend

Cheers to the SB team for looking out for those divers! Sounds like perhaps one of them left not being fully convinced of the gravity of his actions. In the words of Sheck, they were already dead, they just didn't know it yet.

    Konichiwa From Okinawa, Japan!!

Welcome to Okinawa. If you haven't already been oriented, there are numerous dive facilities both on and off-base. Currently Torii Station's scuba locker is down for renovations, but the others are still up and running, providing both air and nitrox fills. For training, all of the base shops...

    GUE/DIR/WKPP vs the world?

As I read up to this point, I kept thinking back to a thread on some forum related to the European EKPP that discussed why they carried two scrubbers on their RB80s rather than just one, like their WKPP counterparts. I recall hearing that it had something to do with their inability to stage...

Buy a Drysuit or Log more dives?

Get the suit. If nothing else, the money you spent on it (and proper undies) will FORCE you to dive more to justify the purchase! Just keep in mind that buying a drysuit is not a single purchase. You will have repairs depending on how well you do or don't take care of it, and you will have...

    Scubacaching

I've not seen any formal groups. Local laws would determine the amount of interaction you can have with the reef or ocean floor, and as you are aware, any kind of digging or disruption to anything but a sandy bottom would likely be perceived as verboten. More along the recreational lines of...

    Tips for dealing with surge?

A gentle "cradle" surge can be easy to acclimate to and fun once you "go with the flow". Strong currents, on the other hand...

How long until you'd consider diving Japan's waters?

Considering that the diving industry has nothing to do with the whaling or other fishing industries (other than having to grovel for permits to use "their beaches and coastline" for recreation), I don't see why you'd punish diving operations who are trying to make a living if you wre truly...
