I did a search to find out about the memory capacity for the 5050. I saw that 2 GIG was the number most agreed on. Is that for just the CF card and you can add more XD memory or is there a total 2 GIG for the camera?

Thanks in advance.

2 gig is the max for media. So, you could have a 2 gig compact flash and an XD card to add to it. I think the max for xd cards is 512 at the moment with a 1 gig coming soon (that info is a few weeks old so the new xd card might already be out). So, you could have between a 2.5 or 3 gig total capacity.

I would go for the compact flash card because it will write RAW files more quickly and if you have the 5050 you should be shooting RAW (IMO). I have a 2 gig card and shoot like a mad man (as chrism says, shoot till your fingers bleed). I have yet to run out of space on my 2 gig card. My practice is to download and change batteries after every 2 dives.

Thanks for the info.

Is there one brand of CF card that seems to perform better with the 5050 and does the 80x vs 40x make a great difference in speed on the 5050 writing RAW?

You might look at this site:

My understanding is that anything over 16x is fine in the 5050. On the other hand, if you are anything like most u/w photographers, an upgrade can't be far away. When I bought my last card, there wasn't that much difference between an 80x and a 40x so I bought the 80x. I don't think the brand matters much.
