Other then that, unless your an electronics engineer it gets really deep on how to make one of these.

It almost sounds like they are delivering a valuable product for a price that matches market conditions. Damn that capitalism! Outsmarted again? Well, the only weapon available to me is research. I am not hearing any alternatives, so I guess I'll have to buy the OEM cable.
 
No not really.
It just involved taking a standard Serial to USB adapter and changing the ID field in the processor. But you need to remove the chip off the board and have the tools to flash it.

I think there was a site http://www.divecable.com he had oceanic stuff before, but not now. Maybe drop the guy an email.
