The V1 LCD back door will only work with the 60M Hero3 housing and not the newer 40M housing. And as the old LCD is about 1mm thicker than the new one, it cannot use the new back doors for either housing (unless you want to trim down the rubber bumpers).
As for it working with the Hero3 cameras, the answer is "sort of". While it provides a functioning viewfinder for the Hero3 Black, it does not offer playback or LCD settings modes with that model. Can't speak for the other models of the Hero3 or 3+ as I don't have any of them to test with. (The Hero3 Black tested with is using FW 2.39.)
