Since you're going into Cayman you will have a tough choice. They ferry you into george town dock, and from there if you walk about 1/4 mile to your right (south) along the main road, you will hit Eden Rock / Devils Grotto which is one of the best shore dives you'll find anywhere. You can easily knock out a few dives there and not get bored...

Or you may want to do one of the trips to Stingray city as that is a true unique experience everyone should do at least once.

Either way, I'm sure you'll have a great trip!

Most likely we will do the Eden Rock/Devils Gratto. That is where I did the Discover SCUBA and it seemed like a a fairly straight forward dive and simple enough to handle as a first 'unescorted' dive. Also, if we still feel unsure, they will provide a 'guide' for a fee (but I'm looking to go cheap as I can after lessons and gear).

Go do a shore dive at turtle reef ... only cost the price of a tank of air ... now how cheap is that  and a great dive ... try to do it night as well
I love eden rock fun dives .. both sites
You really should just go to the island for a week ... they have soooo many great dives .... divetech is the dive operation to use ... they have a three day boat pkg that they give you free air for the rest of the day ... so you go the boat 2 tanks in by noon and shore dive afternoon ... then a coll night dive ... they just leave the tanks out for you with your name on it  god I loved Cayman
I did a full week at 1500.00 per diver with 2 divers ... airfair, rental car, boat pkg, and bed and breakfast type guest house ( nice 1 bedroom condo ) we could see the ocean from our room .. geeze I gotta go back

Taking the Carnival Legend out of Tampa - Sept 30 sailing. Still waiting to see what the true itinerary will be due to the hurricane damage in Costa Maya. This week they are doing Key West and Ocho Rios and skipping Costa Maya and Belize. I really hope they put Belize back on the itinerary - good diving there also.

Brian

I just got off the phone with Carnival and as of now, both Belize and Costa Maya are still on the itinerary. They are still waiting for further input and will be sending out e-mails in regard to any changes. I hope they leave both on there. I had so much fun last year. I can't wait. Only 39 more days to go.

When you do start going out - be sure to ask one of us to tag along. It is always nice when getting started to have someone with a bit more experience 'til you get use to things ;0)

I think Carnival is playing the same game as the airlines: 5 minutes from departure and your plane has not even arrived at the gate, they still tell you "scheduled on-time". Costa Maya had 50% of its port destroyed. They will not be operational for about 6-8 months. Belize, on the other hand, may get missed just due to the logistics of whatever replacement port for Costa Maya. Heck, I'd rather have another sea day and still go to Belize.

Carnival Legend, August 26 departure from Tampa. The ship will visit Key West, Ocho Rios, Grand Cayman and Cozumel. The original itinerary was Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize and Costa Maya. On Legend's September 2 departure from Tampa, the ship will visit Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize and Roatan (the replacement for Costa Maya).

Hello Tampa Bay area divers (and all other SB members),

My name is Brain and I live in NW Tampa.

And Brian, I'm an avid cruiser as well. I thought I'd mention that since your screen name implies that as well. I'm diamond level with RCCL's Crown and Anchor Society and currently looking fwd to a 16 day cruise from Australia to Hawaii via the Tahitian islands as my next big one in 2009. Lot's of diving opps on that one :D
