at 6 ft 5 in 225 lbs, i am a big ol gas hog. sometimes when i want to conserve, i humm to myself. that slows down my exhaling. "hey jude" seems to work for me.
 
One of the instructors at my LDS always breathe out through his nose. Says it slows his breathing and also prevents CO2 buildup in the regulator housing.

Never works for me though - I just get snot in my mask.
 
An easy method of teaching newer divers to breathe is simple, inhale slowly and count to 4, exhale slower and count to 5. It's no more complicated than that.

Hopefully counting while breathing not in between breaths!!!

To some divers, that would be hard to do ie counting up to 5......:D
