I have been looking at going to Antarctica because I think it would be cool. Yes I know I am crazy, but has anyone else ever been there and done some diving?

If not how about Alaska?

How was it? Would you do it again?

Nick

For Alaska diving, you can ask the Alaskan divers directly. They're part of the Pacific Northwest Orca Bait regional forum.

Yes I know I am crazy...
You say that like it's a bad thing.

The Nautilus Explorer (http://www.nautilusexplorer.com/) does live-aboard trips to Alaska. I haven't ever been on the boat but it gets good reviews.

I wanted to go to Antarctica when I was in the Navy but then found out that there was no way they were going to let me dive there. So that was out.
Every now and then, an expedition that's going there offers spots, but the costs are hideous and they're pretty rare. Still. it's plannable
What a number of people have done is to just go to Punta Arenas in Chile or Ushuaia in Argentina and just park there until an oceanographic research ship with diving support comes through on her way south. Then they buy a spot with American $100 bills (The Universal Currency). This worked GREAT on the post-USSR Russian research ships since they were desperately poor after the breakup of the Soviet Union and pretty well-equipped. Obviously, you need a pretty flexible schedule and a small pile of TUC.
You want to keep the fires burning for a trip like this, read this book by Norbert Wu:

In "Atlantis Found" by Clive Cussler, Dirk Pitt dove a sub wreck (which he wrecked) in the Antarctic, solo of course. He wore a suit that circulated warm water internally. While underwater he found this amazingly hot babe, but unfortunately she was deceased (she was part of the crew on the sub). Thought you'd want to know.
