Dove with Spectre on Sunday. First site was Pelican Rock. I would call viz at 40 even though captain said 80.. was very pretty though. Zero current. The next two sites White Cliff and Canyons were more like 20-40 depending on where you were on the site. The last site had a little current if you were outside the kelo zone. Bottom temp was 70 all day. Was a fun day for sure. Here are some pics of the White Cliff site.

Visibility looks pretty outstanding to me. Especially based on my conditions today in the Puget Sound.

I was on the Explorer Sunday. Dive sites were Bat Ray Cove and a wreck (forgot the name). Both 30 feet or so deep. Conditions were as described in the photos above, except water temp was 68 on my computer. Kelp was pretty, and more dense than the photos show. Garibaldi were everywhere. Some sheepshead. Best of all, a 3 minute play time with a young sea lion!!! That was a bucket list thing for me. Conditions were flat calm on the crossing and at the site. No current. Vis in the 30' range.

It was my first time California diving, and what a great start!

The next two days at Catalina, I saw 5 giant black sea bass, including two real bruisers that looked to go 200 pounds easy, right up close and in my face, and the kelp there was incredible, 60 feet tall and thick! Really otherworldly diving, for me. Vis was 20' at the surface, but below the thermocline (61, BRRRR) opened up to 60'.

I certainly loved my California diving, and plan to come back regularly for more.

Thanks for reporting back and so happy to hear that everything went so well for you. The wreck site that you dived would have been the Winfield Scott. An old paddle wheel steamer. There is a cool swim through on that site filled with lobsters.

The dive master told me about the swim-through, but I stayed in the kelp which was so new to me and so beautiful, and was rewarded with the sea lion encounter instead. That was more than worth it for me. Our two dive sites were right together--I can see there must be a multitude of places to explore when I return. Next time I will plan a liveaboard!
