The shape is right for a blenny. But I can't find them in my reference books either.

Are these little guys blennies? I can't find them in any of my field guides.
From the sticky at the top of the forum...
When posting a "Name that Critter" query, if you will include the following information (or as much of it as you can) it'll help a great deal in figuring out what we have...
(1) How big is the critter?
(2) Where in the world is the critter?
(3) What sort of habitat (reef, wreck, sand, rubble etc) is the critter in?
(4) How deep is the critter?
(5) Any observed behavior of the critter...
(6) Did the locals have a common name for the critter (what is it)?
Thanks,
S
P.S. That is a Blenny - as to which one, knowing where it is, how deep it is etc will help narrow it down.

From your avatar I presume you found these in Timor. Have you tried Randall and Allen's "Fishes of the Great Barrier Reef"? Or Debelius' "Fish of the Indo Pacific"? Or,maybe they haven't been classified yet as new fish are being identified all the time.

Thanks Sphyrna,

Here are some details:

Size: 1cm diameter. Length unknown as they stayed in their holes.
Location: North coast East Timor
Habitat: Found in the base of a gorgonian and in a sponge the individuals were not far from each other.
Depth: in the 8-10meter range
Behavior: For the few minutes that I observed them, they just hung out in their holes popping their heads in and out.
Local Name: I need to ask.

Does that help?
