Chiquila, Q.R. — A diver from the town of San Felipe has died due to decompression sickness. He died Wednesday night outside a medical clinic in the seaside town of Chiquila. The local man was diving in the area of Boca Nueva near the Port of Chiquila at the time of the incident.

José Luis Marcial Toto, a former councilor of the Port of Chiquilá, said the diver was in need of a hyperbaric chamber and emergency hospital transfer. The doctor in San Felipe had already finished for the day so residents drove him to Chiquila, but he died along the way.

The deceased diver has been identified as 32-year-old Victor “F”. Marcial Toto said it is important for the area to have a health center with an ambulance for emergency hospital transfers, something they still do not have.

In March, a Chiliean woman died in the Port of Chiquila from decompression sickness after snorkeling off the island of Holbox. An equipped ambulance was not available to transfer her to Kantunilkín Comprehensive Hospital.

In early July, Isla Mujeres Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, delivered a fully repaired hyperbaric chamber back to island fishermen. The chamber is for shared use by fishermen from Isla Mujeres, Chiquilá, Holbox and Puerto Juárez.
