for historical information and images of artifacts divers have recovered from these wrecks. I believe that any artifact in a corrosive salt water enviroment is being saved from destruction. Do not let anyone fool you. Leaving artifacts on the bottom is not preserving them. Otherwise, maybe we should consider dumping all museum collections into the ocean for safe keeping!! Wrecks in deep dark cold water, like the Great Lakes are different. These wrecks should be protected and the artifacts left in situ. Off New Jersey it has been the sport diver and the recovery of artifacts that has lead to the identification of all shipwrecks in the area. Added benifit is no tax dollars were spent to identify all of this maritime history. Im ranting a bit. Come to New jersey if you get a chance you will find some great wrecks in the 80' range.

The argument about the junk car in the Grand Canyon is a good point. I’m not a Scuba Diver so I haven’t been in a tempting situation like that. I do know that I would be a lot more interested and fascinated by a diver’s collection of photos over a collection of items. Photos with the coordinates for each location. Someone may be looking for that wreck and you just found it. Unexploded Ordnance is another thing to keep in mind. Even a civilian vessel or aircraft could have been carrying some type of Explosives. Unless you know for sure.
Something you should have a look at if you haven’t seen it yet:

Is there anyone that knows of any World War II U.S. Military aircraft in the Adriatic Sea or in any ocean or sea?
